Smart baby monitors connect to an app over wi-fi, allowing you to monitor your baby on your smartphone or tablet.

This means there’s no need to bother with a separate parent unit, like with traditional baby monitors.

But that’s not the only convenience of smart monitors. Read on to discover more about the advantages they offer.

Only one smart baby monitor has impressed us enough to be named a Which? Best Buy. You’ll find it in our round-up of the best baby monitors.

1. Control it using your voice

Some smart baby monitors can be paired with a smart speaker, such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, allowing you to command the monitor with your voice.

For example, you can use voice control with the BT Smart Baby Monitor with 5 inch screen for things such as checking the room temperature and playing a lullaby.

2. Monitor your child on more than one device

A traditional baby monitor only lets you monitor your child on the parent unit it comes with.

Smart baby monitors can be connected to multiple devices, which is handy if you want to be able to check them on both your smartphone and tablet. It also means that several different people can keep an eye on them.

3. Check on your child remotely

Traditional baby monitors will lose signal if you move the parent unit too far away from your baby. But smart monitors use wi-fi, so they’re not limited by signal range.

This means that, as long as you have good wi-fi signal, you can check in on them wherever you are, even when you’re away from home.

4. Monitor several children on one device

A smart monitor can come in handy when you want to keep an eye on more than one child.

Some smart monitor apps, like the one used with the Arlo Baby, can connect to multiple cameras at the same time – saving you having to carry several different parent units round the house with you.

5. Track your child’s sleep activity

Smart monitors that track your baby’s sleep activity, like the Motorola MBP667, can provide insight on how much sleep your baby is getting and help you work out their sleeping patterns.
