What does Waitrose say?

Speaking via a post on its customer notifications page, the supermarket has said: 'Waitrose is recalling [Waitrose & Partners Green Pesto with Basil] as a precautionary measure due to the potential presence of salmonella, which may lead to illness if consumed.'

The supermarket's recall notice urges customers to avoid eating the product and instead package it up and return it to a local Waitrose store for a refund.

Waitrose has apologised for the inconvenience caused.

A post on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website says that point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling this product.

What should I do if I'm affected?

If you have bought an affected pack of Waitrose pesto, do not eat it. Head in-store for a full refund.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can lead to food poisoning. Symptoms of food poisoning can include feeling sick, a high temperature, diarrhea, stomach cramps and vomiting.

If you experience food poisoning symptoms, the NHS website recommends having lots of fluids to avoid dehydration.

What are my rights if there's a food recall?

If a product you've purchased has been recalled, you are entitled to a full refund thanks to the Consumer Rights Act.

The retailer that sold you the product should offer that refund even if the item has been in your possession for several months.

If you've already eaten or thrown away the recalled product, you can still get a refund if you're able to show proof that you purchased the item. For example, a till receipt, bank statement or online order confirmation.

See our expert guide for more details on your rights under the Consumer Rights Act when there's a product recall.
