Apple recalls 15-inch Macbook Pros over fire safety risk
Apple has issued a voluntary recall of a number of older generation 15-inch MacBook Pros. These contain a battery that could overheat, posing a potential fire safety risk.
These laptops were primarily sold between September 2015 and February 2017.
Apple is asking customers to stop using the affected 15-inch MacBook Pro units, which can be identified by their product serial number.
The recall does not affect any other 15-inch MacBook Pro units or other Mac notebooks.

Which Apple Macbooks are affected?
To find out if you're affected, you need to find out your Macbook Pro's serial number. To do this follow these steps:
- Click on the Apple menu (the Apple logo in the upper-left corner of your screen) and select 'About This Mac'.
- Check to see if your laptop is a 'MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)'. If it is, go straight to Apple's website.
- Copy-and-paste the serial number from 'About This Mac' (as seen below, in red) into the Eligibility checker half-way down Apple's site.
What should I do?
If your laptop is being recalled you can choose one of the following options to have your battery replaced.
- Find anApple Authorized Service Provider.
- Make an appointment at anApple Retail Store.
- ContactApple Supportto arrange mail-in service via the Apple Repair Center.
For all three options, your Macbook will be sent to an Apple Repair Center for the fix. It will be examined prior to any service to verify that it is eligible for this recall. Apple estimate that the whole service may take one to two weeks.
To prepare your MacBook Pro for service, make sure you back up your data.
What are my rights?
To obtain repairs, you should not require proof of purchase; simply checking the serial number should be enough. You should also not be charged for any work undertaken.
Even if you have bought one second-hand (and you may have done so outside of the 2015-2017 window if you did so), you still have the right to a repair.
