Where to go in June

Summer's here at last and June is the perfect time to enjoy some sunshine before the schools break up, prices soar and the crowds descend. We've picked some of our favourite early-summer destinations for a holiday, or even just a long weekend

Seville

Temperature 31 ºC

Few cities look as good in the sun as Seville. Blue skies complement the white and yellow houses of the Santa Cruz district. Tiny squares, dotted with orange trees, offer shade and, if it gets too hot, the Arab craftsmen who built leafy royal palace the Alcazar, were experts at creating cooling courtyards with pleasant fountains.

As temperatures climb in June, however, locals will still be wearing long-sleeves and even jackets. That's because, for them, anything under 30 degrees is not considered hot. Real heat comes later, with temperatures reaching 40 or more. June is the last sensible summer month to visit the beautiful, spectacular 'frying pan of Spain'.

Berlin

Temperature 22ºC

In June, you'll find the German capital spilling outdoors to enjoy summer, either in its parks, along the banks of the River Spree or in the courtyards of countless cafes and bars.

On light, sunny evenings hire a bike to pedal through bohemian Prenzlauer Berg, to window shop outside small boutiques, or pull up at a Vietnamese restaurant serving great value, delicious bowls of pho.

And it's easy to take a day trip to Potsdam on the local train network, where you can look round the former summer home of Frederick the Great, or explore the network of lakes that surround the city.

Vancouver

Temperature 20ºC

The largest city on Canada’s west coast really comes into its own this month if you’re a fan of the great outdoors. This shouldn’t come as a surprise given that it's surrounded by ocean on one side and mountains on the other.

You could be at a pavement table, tucking into the freshest sushi outside of Japan, or strolling in Stanley Park, the green lungs of the city.

If the weather plays ball, play ball on the beach at Kitsilano, or head to the hills for some hiking or mountain biking. Go up in a cable car, and come down with gravity – you are on holiday after all.

Lisbon

Temperature 25ºC

June’s soaring temperatures bring residents out into the brightly decorated streets of Lisbon for the annual Festas de Lisboa, a month-long series of parades and parties.

By night the city’s historic quarters are filled with music, dancing and the smell of grilled sardines, while by day you can enjoy Lisbon’s trundling wooden trams, good-value shopping and unmissable sights, like the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos – a magnificent 16th century monastery with intricate carvings.

And when the sightseeing becomes too exhausting, you can simply flop on one of the stunning beaches surrounding the capital, like Praia de Carcavelos.

St Andrews

Temperature 17ºC

Should you be lucky enough to bag a coveted slot for a round on  the Old Course in St Andrews, the long days at this time of year mean you could be teeing off as early as 6.30am. Don’t worry, though, there’s plenty to do if golf is not your thing.

A walk on the beach is a good way to start the day, or you could even break into a jog if you fancy a “Chariots of Fire” moment: the opening scenes of the 1981 film were shot here.

There are plenty of cafes and small shops on the streets that house buildings belonging to the university, which was founded here in the 15th century, making it Scotland’s oldest. And if you do want to get out and about, there are some lovely fishing villages on the Fife coast and the newly opened V&A Dundee design museum just over the River Tay.
