Eon Next

Eon Next offers customers sustainable energy, transparent billing and no exit fees, but is it the right supplier for you?
Marianne Calnan

Eon Next is a new sustainability-driven gas and electricity supplier in the energy market and a new part of the Eon Group.

It was set up in 2020 and says it offers customers 100% renewable electricity, transparent billing, no exit fees as well as a dedicated team of energy specialists so you get a more personal, faster and easier service.

Eon took over Npower's customers when it ceased trading in 2019. It started migrating around 2 million former Npower customers as well as 3.5 million existing Eon customers over to Eon Next in July 2020.

Which? verdict on Eon Next

Eon Next homepage

This was the first time Eon Next has been included in the survey as it only became established in 2020. It claims its customers can be 'safe in the knowledge' that it has the 'backing of an established energy supplier' given it is part of the Eon Group, but it has a way to go to impress customers enough to land nearer the top of our table.

Eon Next was the only provider in our survey to be rated very poor for value for money. Plus it scored better for statement clarity than its parent company Eon, with 14 and 16% of people calling this aspect excellent respectively.

Eon Next's customer service

There was room for improvement when it came to most of the measures we asked customers about. Eon Next got two stars for customer service, payment accuracy and value for money, and three stars for the clarity of its statements. Eon Group, however, got two stars for its statement clarity.

Half of Eon Next customers told Which? that they felt its customer service was good and 54% said they were satisfied with it as their supplier overall.

Around a third (32%) of Eon Next customers who made a complaint said positive things about the way it dealt with it, whether over the phone or via email. And more than half (54%) said they were satisfied overall with Eon Next as their energy supplier.

If your electricity meter beeps or you have less than £1 in credit remaining, you can get emergency credit of £5 from Eon Next. Should your gas meter beep or you have less than £2 remaining, Eon Next can send you £5 worth of emergency credit.

Does Eon Next sell renewable energy?

The company says it sells 100% renewable energy.

It generates a small amount of the renewable electricity used by its customers, buys around a third directly from renewable generators, and buys renewable energy certificates to match more of its customers’ use with renewable power.

Eon Next in the news

Eon Next in 2021

January: Eon Next experienced backlash on social media after it sent socks to 30,000 customers as part of its energy-saving campaign. This came at a time when energy prices were expected to surge in the coming months for those not on fixed-rate tariffs.

The supplier said in a statement that it was ‘incredibly sorry’ for how its actions made some customers feel.
