Best heated throws 2025

We've tested heated throws from Lakeland, Dreamland, Beurer, The White Company and more to find out which will keep you snuggly all winter and are cheapest to run

Heated throws are perfect for snuggling up on the sofa when the weather turns colder. We've tested heated throws ranging in price from £60 to £150, so we can bring you the best for warmth and value this winter.

We use precise temperature measurements taken with a thermocouple to help you avoid the heated throws that barely heat up after 20 minutes, and point you to those that will be nice and toasty just as you tune in to your favourite TV show.

Five of the heated throws we've tested are now Best Buys and one of them is a Great Value too, so you can stay warm without burning a hole in your finances.

Heated throws and electric blankets are not the same thing. If you're after the best electric blanket for your mattress, rather than a snuggly throw for your sofa, then read our reviews of the best electric blankets.

How our tests find you the best

Heating speed and evenness

We test how quickly and evenly the throws heat up. The best will be toasty in less than 10 minutes, the worst will take longer than 20 minutes and still have cold spots.

Energy costs

The cheapest heated throws to run cost just 2p an hour. The most energy-guzzling can cost twice as much per hour to run.

Comfort

We ask a panel of testers to rate each throw for that all-important snuggle factor that makes heated throws so appealing.

We also test...

We check all throws for electrical safety, although it's important that you always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

How we test heated throws

Electric blanket testing

We've designed a test that measures how quickly and evenly each throw heats up. We also factor in how comfortable each throw is, according to a panel of volunteers.

We regularly revisit the heated throws on sale to see if there are any more popular models to test, and when we find them, we do so.

Heating speed and evenness

  • Heat-up time We attach temperature sensors to six different locations on each heated throw and record how quickly each throw heats up over a five-minute and 20-minute period on the highest setting. The best throws heat up twice as fast as the worst. We've also seen some that heat up quickly initially, only for the increase in heat to rapidly taper off.
  • Heat distribution Using the six temperature sensors, we record how evenly each throw heats up. There are big differences here: most heat fairly evenly, but quite a few have irregular hot and cold spots.
  • Responsiveness Once the heated throw has reached its maximum temperature, we lower the temperature setting and record how responsive each throw is to the change.

Comfort and ease of use

  • Comfort A panel of five volunteers assess each heated throw for comfort. There's quite a big difference in how comfy each one is – for example, underwires are more noticeable in some than others.
  • Power cord length We've seen that manufacturers often don't list the length of the power cords for throws, so we record these figures and tell you how they compare with the average.

Energy use and safety

  • Energy use We attach each heated throw to an energy monitor and record how much energy it uses when running on its highest setting. Prices range from 2p to 4p an hour. While some manufacturers and other online reviews list the cost for the lowest settings, our testing found that this results in such low temperature increases that we don't think it's a realistic setting for keeping warm.
  • Measurement We used the RS PRO energy meter, £28, from RS Components. If you're interested in measuring your throw or other appliances around your home, you can buy similar meters starting from around £18 from popular retailers such as Amazon and Screwfix.
  • Safety After testing, each heated throw undergoes a full electrical safety test.

Are heated throws safe?

If you buy your heated throw from a reputable UK retailer, as we did for our tests, then it should be safe. As part of our test, we conduct a full electricity safety test on each throw. To date, every single one we've reviewed has passed.

But take extra care if you buy one from an online marketplace, as any risk posed by heated throws often comes from disreputable sellers.

Old, worn-out heated throws can also be unsafe. We recommend inspecting heated throws regularly for signs of wear, such as frayed fabric, exposed wires or overheating connectors.

What should I look for in a heated throw?

  • How comfy is it and can you feel any wires?
  • What are the running costs?
  • How long is the cord to ensure you can plug it in without needing a messy (and potentially dangerous) extension lead?
  • What is the heat-up time?
  • How good is the heat distribution?

We record all these key things to look for in a heated throw in our reviews, above.

How much does it cost to run a heated throw?

Manufacturers' claimed running costs for heated throws are usually based on their lowest power settings. But we've found that lowest settings are often so ineffective that you probably wouldn't bother with them. This is why we test heated throws on their highest settings, which we believe better reflects their real-life use.

On their highest settings, our tests have found that heated throws cost between 2p and 4p an hour to run.

How to wash a heated throw

All the heated throws we've tested can be washed, but you should check the manufacturers' instructions before doing so.

Remember to remove the cable before washing and use a gentle low-temperature setting on your washing machine.

What is better than a heated throw?

The heated throws we've tested come at a range of prices and hopefully not all will break the bank. However, a hot water bottle is an even more affordable option.

Although heated throws and electric blankets are different products with different average running costs (2p-4p per hour and 2p-6p per hour, respectively), our guide can give you an idea of costs: hot water bottle or electric blanket, what's best and cheapest for keeping you warm in bed.
