Best foot massagers 2026: tried and tested for achy feet

We've tested foot massage appliances from Homedics, Renpho and more to find out which ones soothe sore feet and give great pain relief
Sam MorrisSenior researcher & writer

Sam – an ex-science teacher – uses his physics degree and over five years experience getting hands-on with products at Which? to test everything from beard trimmers and trampolines to IPL hair removal and electric fans

A foot massager and a foot warmer on a light green background, with colorful knitted socks beside them.

The best foot massager can help to relieve muscle soreness when you've been on your feet all day or are recovering from exercise.

We tested popular foot massage machines from brands including Bob and Brad, Homedics and Renpho, costing from £35 to more than £200.

Testers with different shoe sizes – one of whom is a trail runner – assessed how effectively they massaged, how comfortable they felt to use, the range of settings and more.

We found three Best Buys that are easy to operate and provide a strong and effective massage.

How our tests find you the best

We've tested 14 foot massagers

We independently test foot massagers from the big brands and across a range of prices to find you the best.

Effectiveness

Too soft? Too hard? Just right! Testers of different ages try all massagers to find that Goldilocks product that soothes and works out knots without being too strong or too weak.

Comfort

Testers with a range of shoe sizes assess each machine for comfort. We also check which have room for larger feet.

We also test...

how easy each foot massager is to operate and whether it's versatile and easy to clean. Plus, how soothing the heat settings are.

How we test foot massagers

Many free-to-access websites review foot massagers using just one tester, basing scores on their preferences. These sites may also receive foot massagers free of charge, directly from manufacturers.

Which? tests are different. Our test scores are based on measurements and ratings, and brands can't buy their way into our testing. We select the most searched-for foot massagers, and we pay for every single one we test.

We also regularly revisit the foot massagers on sale to see if there are any more popular models that need testing.

Effectiveness: how well does it relieve aches and pains?

Testers try out different settings on the foot massagers and rate them for how comfortable and effective they are. The best foot massagers are powerful enough to work out the knots in your feet; the worst are too intense or too weak to have any effect.

We also use temperature probes to measure how hot the heating elements get over a 15-minute period. Most take 10 to 15 minutes to put out a noticeable amount of heat, reaching 40°C by the 15-minute mark on average. The toastiest got to a soothing 46°C.

Comfort: how well do feet fit inside?

Most of the foot massagers we review have foot sleeves to insert your feet into. Our testers score each machine on how comfortable their feet feel inside it. The best have plenty of room to fit larger shoe sizes; the worst are too snug and can't accommodate them.

Versatility: can you fine-tune how intense the massage is?

We look for foot massagers with a wide range of adjustable massage, air compression and heat settings. This is so you can tailor the massage to suit your comfort level.

Ease of use: is it simple to operate and clean?

Testers also rate how easy the control panel is to use on each foot massager and how easy it is to adjust the settings. The best foot massagers also have detachable foot sleeves that you can throw into the washing machine for easy cleaning.

Do foot massagers really work?

Yes. If you've been on your feet all day, or you're experiencing muscle soreness after exercise, a foot massager can help to relieve some pain. However, they shouldn't be used as a permanent solution to chronic pain.

Emma McConnachie, a practising podiatrist and spokesperson for the Royal College of Podiatry, told us: 'Foot massagers are not a substitute for professional foot care.

'If you are experiencing ongoing foot pain, discomfort or other foot-related issues, consult a podiatrist for a comprehensive assessment and tailored treatment plan.

'And if you have open wounds, sores or infections, you should avoid the use of the devices as they may worsen or delay healing.'

Foot massager tester

Alison Potter, senior editor at Which?, tested foot massagers after a weekend of running.

'The air pressure and kneading modes on the foot massagers really helped to soothe my heel and toe pain from a long trail run, as well as to alleviate soreness on the balls of my feet. After using them, I was surprised by how much of a difference it made and how much better my feet felt.'

Do podiatrists recommend foot massagers?

foot massager

Emma said: 'They can be used for general foot comfort and relaxation; however, there are limitations and potential risks.

'Where there is an underlying health condition that affects the circulation or sensation in the feet, including peripheral arterial disease, diabetes, deep vein thrombosis and neurological conditions, these devices should only be used under the advice of a healthcare professional who is familiar with your medical history.

'If you are pregnant or have a health condition and are unsure whether you can use a foot massager, consult your GP.'

What to look for in a foot massager

Person in black and white floral pants using a red and black foot massager on a wooden floor.
  • Massage Most have adjustable massage settings so you can tailor the intensity to suit your comfort level. However, even low settings may be too intense for people with fibromyalgia or heightened touch sensitivity. You may be better off using a foot spa without rollers for heat therapy and gentle bubbles to help with achy feet.
  • Heat All the models we test have a heating element that manufacturers claim soothes sore muscles. However, none of the foot massagers in our tests had a heat setting that wowed our testers.
  • Air pressure Many have an air compression setting, which manufacturers claim boosts blood flow and circulation. This feature makes a sound akin to Darth Vader breathing and feels like a blood pressure monitor as it slowly squeezes your feet. Start low on this setting, as it can be quite 'pinchy' at higher intensities.
  • Foot sleeves Most models have foot sleeves that you slot your feet into, including our Best Buy recommendations. We also tested open-foot models where you place your feet on top. They were generally better for people with bigger feet, but heat settings tended to be less effective.
