The average person spends 26 years of their life asleep, so, if you're buying a new mattress, it should be from a brand you can trust. We surveyed 2,851 Which? members about their mattresses to compile our definitive guide to the best and worst mattress brands.

We have results for 17 mattress brands, including key high street brands such as Dreams, Ikea, John Lewis and Silentnight, as well as some of the most popular bed-in-a-box brands – Emma, Eve Sleep and Simba.

Mattress brands compared

Our survey revealed that there's a big difference in customer score between the best and worst brands:

  • The best mattress brand received a Which? customer satisfaction score of 87% and an excellent comfort rating of five stars out of five.
  • The worst mattress brand in our survey scored 70% for Which? customer satisfaction and a comfort rating of three stars.

As well as an overall customer satisfaction score and comfort rating, each mattress brand is rated for value for money, how well mattresses from that brand match the manufacturer description and whether the products met owners' overall expectations.

Our individual brand review pages have more detail on key brands, including opinions from customers. Leading brands we've reviewed include:

How we researched mattress brands

In August 2021 we asked 2,851 Which? members who had bought a mattress in the past five years to tell us about their experiences. To work out customer scores for mattress brands, we asked what brand of mattress members owned, whether they were satisfied with it and whether they'd recommend it to friends or family.

We also asked about where they had bought their last mattress and how satisfied they were with the experience of buying a mattress from the retailer, both in-store and online, to help you identify the best mattress shops to buy from. As well as an overall score, we also rated the range of mattresses available, the quality of advice offered and how easy it was to arrange delivery, as well as value for money.

If you're not yet a member, join Which? today to find out everything you need to know about buying the best mattress and secure a good night's sleep for years to come.
