Spending a few hundred pounds on a mattress you haven’t tried for yourself sounds risky. But our lab tests have revealed that some of the best mattresses are only available in vacuum-packed boxes that you order online.
We’ve rounded up the top five of these 'bed-in-a-box' mattresses for 2022 to help you make a decision you’ll be happy with for many years to come.
You can sleep safe in the knowledge that the bed-in-a-box mattresses we’ve recommended below will give your spine the support it needs, without sagging or softening with time.
While you can't try before you buy with these mattresses, each one is available with a sleep trial of several weeks, during which time you can send it back for an exchange or, in many cases, a full refund. We've also independently tested each of the mattresses below to ensure that we only recommend those that are durable, resist sagging, support your back and are easy to turn.
Read on for our top five bed-in-a-box mattress recommendations, or jump straight to our full round-up of the best mattresses.

This pocket sprung and memory foam hybrid is one of the best mattress money can buy. It provides good support whatever position you sleep in; it’s excellent at preventing the transfer of movement from one side of the bed to the other; and you can sleep safe in the knowledge that it will stand the test of time without sagging, softening or becoming less supportive.

This high-scoring Best Buy is durable - our tests simulate approximately 10 years of use, and this mattress was excellent. Even after years of use, it won't sag, soften or become less supportive. This mattress will provide good support if you tend to sleep on your side or your front, and you'll get great support if you sleep on your back.

This simple memory foam mattress is affordable and a great Best Buy option if you usually sleep on your front or your back. It has a 7.5cm foam core and another 10cm layer of viscos foam on top. This top layer of memory foam will envelope your body, while this will help stop the transfer of movement across the bed (great news for your bed fellow) it does make it harder to turn over on.

We’ve not seen many cheaper Best Buys than this, and this reasonably-priced mattress scored highly in our tough tests. It comes rolled up in a bag, rather than a box, but this mattress provides good support for everyone but it’s truly exceptional for people sleeping on their back. It’s also easy to roll over on and it won’t dip in the middle or sag, although it will get slightly softer over time.

It’s essential that your mattress gives your spine the support it needs. That’s why we test each one to see how well it will support people of various sizes, sleeping on their back, side and front. So no matter what your favourite sleeping position, we've got your back.
After simulating up to 10 years of use by rolling a heavy barrel over the mattress thousands of times, we then repeat the body-support tests to see whether the mattress becomes less supportive over time. We also assess the mattress for any change in height or firmness, so we can tell you whether it will sag or soften after a few years of use.
That’s not all. Our testing also reveals how breathable a mattress is, how easy it is to turn over on, and how stable it is. Light sleepers should try to buy a mattress with five stars for stability. These are the best at absorbing bounces, so you’ll be less likely to be disturbed when your partner rolls over or gets up in the night.
