Best car wash kit 2026: car shampoos and wheel cleaners tested

We've tested popular car shampoo and wax products from Autoglym, Karcher, TurtleWax and more, plus alloy wheel cleaners
Hardeep ChannaResearcher & writer

Kitchen roll critic, cleaning gadget guru and loo roll expert, Hardeep has tackled 100-plus stains, and isn't afraid to make a mess and clean it up.

There are as many car products as there are car brands, so finding the right one can be difficult.

To steer you on the right course, we’ve tested popular car shampoos, waxes, all-in-one products and alloy wheel cleaners from top brands such as Autoglym, Karcher, Meguiar's and TurtleWax.

When we tested car wash products, we pitted brands with separate shampoos and waxes against two-in-one bottles, and our findings might surprise you.

Three brands impressed enough for their products to be named Best Buys. One is also budget-friendly, meaning it’s a Great Value pick.

We also found a standout alloy wheel cleaner and a decent, cheaper option.

How we test car wash kits and wheel cleaners

To find the best car wash kits and wheel cleaners, we put them through a series of controlled tests that mirror real-life circumstances. We don't accept freebies from product manufacturers or retailers.

We regularly revisit the car wash kits and wheel cleaners on sale to see if there are any more popular products that need testing. When we find them, we do.

Cleaning performance

Our tester wipes mud away with a wash mit.

To assess car shampoo and wax kits, we apply a controlled layer of mud to a section of a door panel and use the product exactly as directed. After cleaning, the area is lightly dried and left until the next day before being photographed, allowing the true finish to show. The best products leave a clear, glossy, almost mirror-like surface, while less effective ones can leave water marks and swirls of dirt.

Wheel cleaners are tested in a similar way, but with real-world grime rather than added dirt. Each product is used to remove built-up brake dust and road grime from a pair of wheels. The process is repeated twice, alternating between the rear wheels and the grimier front wheels, so that every cleaner is tested under comparable conditions. Like car shampoos, the best will leave the surface spotless and shiny, but the worst struggle with heavier grime.

Ease of application

Which? cleaning expert prepares one of the car shampoos.
Our cleaning expert prepares one of the car shampoos.

When testing car wash kits and wheel cleaners, we assess how easy they are to use.

  • Preparation is the first step. Some products are ready to use, while others need diluting, shaking or setting up with a pressure washer. We note how much effort is needed before cleaning can begin.
  • We also assess ease of application. Most require some scrubbing or a simple sponge-and-bucket wash, which is to be expected. But if a cleaner needs noticeably more effort, extra steps or awkward techniques, we take that into account. Small frustrations matter, too.

During testing, we've found products that lathered really well and were easy to rub in. However, some came in bottles with stiff lids and fiddly locks, which adds hassle.

Quality of instructions

Clear instructions matter when you're using any product on your car. A car is a significant investment, and most people will want reassurance that they're using a product correctly and safely.

That is why we assess how clear and user-friendly the instructions are. We look at everything from layout and spacing to whether diagrams or images are genuinely helpful. We also consider the level of detail provided.

The best instructions guide you through each step without ambiguity, while the worst cram in information, making key points easy to overlook.

How to wash a car at home

Mud being cleaned away with a wash mit and shampoo by Which? cleaning expert.
Our tester cleans away mud with a wash mit and shampoo.

There are several ways to wash your car properly, so it's important to follow the instructions on your chosen cleaning product.

  1. If you have a pressure washer, start by rinsing the car to remove loose and stubborn dirt before applying shampoo. If not, use a hose or a bucket of water to wet the car.
  2. Before applying any shampoo, some products require the surface to be cool to the touch, so make sure your car's not hot.
  3. Next, apply the shampoo. Some products are designed for a pressure washer canister, while others are better suited to a sponge or wash mitt. Even when using a pressure washer, gently agitating the surface will help remove more of the dirt.
  4. Leave the soap for a minute or two, then rinse it away and dry the car with a clean cloth to prevent water marks.
  5. If your shampoo doesn't include wax, apply a small amount with a polisher or microfibre cloth and work it in one panel at a time.

Can you use washing-up liquid to wash a car?

Washing-up liquid might seem like a convenient alternative to car shampoo, but it’s not the best choice for regular use. It’s designed to cut through grease on plates and pans, and that same strength can strip away the wax and protective sealants on your car’s paintwork. Over time, this can leave the finish looking dull and less protected against the elements.

It also lacks the added lubricants found in dedicated car shampoos. These help dirt slide off the surface safely, reducing the risk of fine scratches or swirl marks. Repeated use of household detergents can also dry out rubber seals and plastic trim.

If you’re caught short and need to clean your car urgently, a small amount of well-diluted washing-up liquid used once is unlikely to cause serious damage. But for routine washing, one of the recommended car shampoos above is a better investment and will help keep your car looking its best for longer.

How to clean car seats

  1. Start by clearing out any obvious rubbish and loose dirt. Empty the door pockets and footwells.
  2. Next, brush off the seats so you’re not grinding debris into the fabric as you clean. A handheld vacuum can be particularly useful for lifting dirt from seats and from the tight gaps between cushions. Our guide to handheld vacuum cleaners explains which models are best suited to car interiors.
  3. For marks and spills, you may need a dedicated stain remover. We have tested a range of carpet stain removers, and some are suitable for use on upholstery, too. Always check the label carefully and test a small amount on an inconspicuous area first.
