Best and worst car breakdown cover providers 2026

From the AA and RAC to Green Flag and Aviva, we compare the top breakdown providers in our survey of thousands of customers
Jack MurphySenior market analyst

Jack has been thoroughly analysing a wide range of new service areas at Which? for over three years. In that time, the markets he's covered have included gyms, wine clubs and car breakdown providers amongst others.

Choosing the right car breakdown cover is a crucial decision that can make a huge difference if you're later stranded on the roadside. The top providers are known for their fast response times, typically arriving in under an hour, and their ability to fix your car on the spot.

However, a poor service can leave you waiting for hours and the mechanic might not have the right tools or expertise to get you back on the road, potentially causing major stress and disruption.

Our ratings are based on a survey of more than 8,500 people, including Which? members and the general public, who called out a breakdown service in the past year. These real-life experiences ensure that our findings are trustworthy and reflect the actual experiences of customers.

Our tables reveal how the companies stack up against each other. You'll see that the best providers aren't necessarily the household names in the sector.

How much does car breakdown cover cost?

Most providers offer a range of options, each with different levels of cover. The cheapest policies start from as little as £25 a year, while the most expensive can be well over £100.

Check out the different levels of cover below, then head to our individual breakdown provider reviews for full pricing details.

What level of breakdown cover do you need?

There are four main types of breakdown cover, listed below in typical price order (lowest to highest).

1. Roadside assistance

  • The most basic form of breakdown cover

A breakdown van will come out to you and will either fix your car at your breakdown location or tow you to the nearest garage. Most policies have a recovery limit (the maximum towing distance) of 10-20 miles from the scene of the breakdown.

2. Home assist

  •  Extends basic roadside assistance to cover you at home

While it might be tempting to save money upfront by choosing basic cover, you could end up paying large sums if you break down on your driveway.

If you choose to upgrade your cover from basic to include home assist (also known as 'home start'), it will take 24 hours for any policy to come into effect with most providers. If you've already broken down at home without cover, many providers will still help, but they will likely charge a hefty surcharge on top of your policy fee.

3. National recovery

  • Will tow you to any destination in the UK

You and your passengers will get towed to your chosen destination anywhere in the UK (usually including your home if you wish) or the nearest garage to your destination. If you only have roadside assistance, you'll be towed to a local garage.

4. European cover

  • Breakdown cover both in the UK and Europe

If you're travelling on the continent and your car breaks down, you will be covered for most scenarios, as European cover is often very comprehensive. If you don't already have this cover, most UK providers won't be able to offer any assistance once you're abroad, so make sure you take out European cover before you leave the UK.

If you don't have European cover and break down abroad, you'll be left to organise assistance yourself from a local recovery service and be stuck with towing and repair charges.

Most providers offer annual and single-trip cover. Most offer around 90 days of travel cover in Europe as part of their annual policies, but check this and whether the country you're travelling to is listed as a covered destination.

What makes a Which? Recommended Provider for breakdown cover?

To become a Which? Recommended Provider (WRP) for breakdown cover, providers must:

  • have an overall score of at least 70%
  • have a customer score of at least 70%
  • score at least three stars in all areas rated in our customer satisfaction survey.

The best-performing providers that meet the above criteria are deemed Which? Recommended Providers.

To become a Great Value provider for breakdown cover, providers must:

  • have an overall score of at least 65%
  • have a customer score of at least 65%
  • score at least four stars for value for money
  • be cheaper than the market average in our price analysis.

We rank breakdown providers by their overall score. The overall score is made up of:

  • 50% customer score
  • 30% waiting time
  • 20% outcome of the call-out.

All ratings are based on survey responses from more than 8,000 people who experienced a breakdown in the 12 months before our survey.

The customer score reflects how satisfied customers say they are with their provider and how likely they would be to recommend it. Providers must have a minimum sample size of 40 to be given a customer score.
