The new BMW X5 has got a big job on its hands. It's got to be luxurious and sophisticated, capable of heading off road, engaging to drive on road and still find time to blow your socks off with its fancy tech. That's a lot of asks, but then it has to justify its big price. Find out whether it pulls it off in our full BMW X5 review.

Included in our expert review
  • Pros and cons
  • What is it?
  • What's it great at?
  • What's it like to drive?
  • How reliable is it?
  • How comfortable and spacious is it?
  • How economical is it to run?
  • How safe is it?
  • Is there anything I should look out for?
  • With so many options, not only could the buying process be a long, complicated procedure as you try to figure out what's important and what you actually want, but the cost of the car will rocket if you keep adding on the tech, trinkets and lavish touches.
  • When the X5 was launched, we were perplexed at BMW’s decision to charge an annual subscription fee for use of built-in Apple Carplay after the first year. We’re delighted to report that the brand has now fallen in line with other manufacturers in offering Apple Carplay without time limitations on all models (including the X5) that feature its latest operating system 7.
  • From launch, the X5 wasn’t available with Android Auto, meaning non Apple smartphone users couldn’t benefit from integrating their phone’s features into the car’s infotainment display. BMW has announced that Google’s system will be offered alongside Apple Carplay from mid-2020.
