The best karaoke machines encourage even the shyest partygoer to take centre stage and belt out a classic tune.

To find the best karaoke machines worth buying for presents or for setting the scene at your next Christmas party, birthday party or kitchen disco, we gathered a team of karaoke-loving Which? researchers and put the most popular karaoke machines to the test.

Of the many we tested, only one was the star of the show and is a Best Buy, scoring highly for sound, style and ease of use.

How our test finds you the best

Fun design

A good karaoke machine should put you in a party mood. We assess whether each model brings fun and quirky energy.

Ease of use

You don't want a machine that's too complicated, which is why we check which are easiest to set up and adjust.

Speaker and microphone quality

No-one wants their Celine Dion number ruined by a crackly mic or speaker, so we check the sound quality of both.

We also test ...

How many microphones are included for belting out duets and whether they're wired or wireless in case you want to leap around.

How we test karaoke machines

We assemble a group of karaoke-loving Which? testers of various ages, genders and singing abilities to put bestselling karaoke machines to the test.

We buy every karaoke machine we test.

  • We rank the karaoke machines for how much their looks make you want to get the party started, taking into account their aesthetics, light displays and microphones.
  • We judge each for how easily it can be set up for use, connected to devices using its various connection methods, and how easily the controls can adjust the volume levels of the mics and backing tracks.
  • Our group of testers sing their favourite tunes with every karaoke machine, and we judge how good the speaker sounds when playing both the backing track and the vocals of the person singing. Speakers that lack volume, have crackly microphones and that sound distorted are penalised.

Why you can trust us: at Which? we're free from manufacturer and retailer influence. Find out more about our impartiality and how your support helps us to stay editorially independent.

Do you need a TV for a karaoke machine?

It depends on how visible you'd like the lyrics to be. If you're karaoke-ing in a large room or want lots of partygoers to join in while you sing, it can be helpful to have the lyrics displayed on a larger screen so they can easily be seen.

It's not essential though. Any device that has a screen and a Bluetooth connection - your smartphone, tablet or laptop, for example - can be used to display the lyrics while you play the music through the karaoke machine's speaker.

How do I turn my TV into a karaoke machine?

Singing karaoke with lyrics on TV

There are several ways to display the song lyrics of whatever you're singing on your TV.

Smart TVs that share the same wi-fi as your smartphone can connect via the screen-sharing function on your phone. You can then stream videos with the music and lyrics from your phone to your TV, using apps such as YouTube.

Alternatively, you could just use the YouTube app on your smart TV if it has it, or connect your laptop to your TV using a HDMI cable.

However, the key will be to ensure the sound comes out of your karaoke machine, if you'd rather it didn't come out of the TV. To do this, you'll either need to establish a Bluetooth connection between your TV and the karaoke machine, or use an AUX cable to connect them up.
