About Toshiba laptops

As with some other manufacturers, Toshiba’s array of laptop ranges can sometimes seem slightly confusing. It has used some rather interesting names too - Qosmio, for example. It groups the models into four ranges on its website - thin, small & light; multimedia & gaming; everyday computing; and large display.

Probably best known for its everyday budget models, Toshiba is the third most-owned brand by Which? members, with 14% of laptop owners having one at home. The average price paid is just under £500, which is less than the most common price paid overall.

Testing Toshiba laptops

Of the models we've tested, ease of use and performance tend to be average or above. Screen quality is also generally very good, but sound quality from the built-in speakers can be disappointing. Design, particularly of the cheaper models, is rather unimaginative and models can look a little bulky.

Toshiba's laptop ranges

Toshiba has a number of families (see below) that its laptop ranges sit in. Within these there are a number of different series, each including a number of different versions.

Toshiba Satellite C660

The popular Toshiba Satellite C660 looks similar to many other models in this Series

  • Satellite (prices start at £320) This is the range you're most likely to see in stores. There are a bewildering number of series that lie within this family. With screen sizes ranging from 13 to 17 inches, you can choose either AMD's latest dual core processors or Intel's latest generation Core i processors. Popular series include the Satellite C660 and L755.
  • Portege (prices start at around £600) This range offers laptops for mobile computing and includes the following series – Z830, R700 and R830. The Portege Z830 is Toshiba's ultrabook range. All models have 13-inch displays.
  • Qosmio (prices start at around £800) Aimed at multimedia fans, this range offers three different laptop series in two different screen sizes – 15 and 17-inch. The F750 and X770 series are capable of showing 3D content. They have separate Nvidia graphics cards to boost gaming performance, and have Blu-ray drives.
