Lidl Silvercrest Espresso Machine (£80): what does it offer?
Ground coffee machines give you lots of control over the drink you make, but they can be fiddly to get the hang of, especially as you often have to dispense the espresso and froth the milk separately.
Lidl’s machine is designed to make things simpler, with automatic milk frothing and pre-programmed drink options.
The Lidl Silvercrest Espresso Machine will be available in stores from Thursday 12 December, just in time for the festive season.
Automatic milk frothing
Most ground coffee machines come with a steam wand, which you use to froth milk manually in a separate jug.
Lidl’s machine has a built-in, automatic milk frother that lets you create lattes and cappuccinos at the touch of a button. It can also dispense frothed milk on its own, which could come in handy for making hot chocolate and other coffee-free drinks.
If automatic milk frothing appeals to you, it’s also worth considering the Breville One Touch ground coffee machine, which has similar features and typically costs around £150.

Preset drink options
The Silvercrest Espresso Machine’s simple controls have six pre-programmed drink options, so you can pour yourself a coffee at the touch of a button.
You can choose from espresso, latte or cappuccino, and each drink has both single and double shot options.
Lidl’s machine also lets you adjust the drink size and milk quantity, so you can tailor drinks to suit your individual taste.
There’s even a memory function that can save your preferred settings, giving you the perfect ratio of milk to coffee every time.

Is a ground coffee machine right for me?
Ground coffee machines are a great choice for those who want full barista-level control over their coffee, but they’re more hands-on than other types of machine, and can take some time to master.
Prices vary, with some costing more than £500, but you don’t have to pay this much to get a decent one – our cheapest Best Buy costs less than £50. Running costs shouldn’t be too high, either, as ground coffee is typically cheaper than both beans and capsules.
