Welcome to ‘years of dreamy sleep’ says MattressOnline about its Horizon Adventurer 1000 hybrid mattress. The ‘graphite infused’ memory foam is supposed to make it cooler to sleep on, and this is combined with a traditional pocket-sprung core to give you the best of both worlds.
The central 16cm core of micro-pocket springs is sandwiched between two 3cm foam layers, with a further 3cm section of memory foam towards the surface you sleep on, all held in place by a non-removable knitted cover.
This single-sided mattress doesn’t need turning over, which is a bonus, but it will need to be rotated head to toe once every three months.

Bag a bargain with this entry-level foam mattress, on offer at Argos. It's light and simply constructed from a polyurethane foam core, topped with pressure-relieving memory foam, and only 18cm deep. It's delivered for free, rolled up, so it's easy to carry into your bedroom.
Beware if you prefer a firm sleeping surface as this mattress is as soft as they come. You may find that its sink-in top layer of memory foam makes it comfortable but a bit engulfing.

Inside the Jay-Be 2000 Hybrid E-Pocket Eco Truecore (130/0242) you'll find an 18.5cm pocket spring topped with multiple layers of polyester webbing.
We rated it a 6.1 on our rating scale, where 1 is very firm and 10, very soft.
There's only a five-year warranty with this mattress which is worth bearing in mind. The cover can't be removed for cleaning, so you'll have to factor that into general maintenance.

EZE Hybrid Ultra Mattress

EZE currently has its Hybrid Ultra mattress reduced to £539 from its £599 RRP.

The EZE Hybrid Ultra 800 mattress may catch your eye with promises of long-lasting memory foam, pressure-relieving breathable layers and pocket springs optimising support while you lie down plus a soft-touch fabric cover. EZE describes this mattress as a hybrid, but the large pocket spring core means we class it as pocket sprung, despite the foam layers.
Underneath the polyester cover there’s plenty going on. A large 25cm pocket sprung core makes up much of this mattress, that’s then topped with four different layers of foam. First there are two 1.5cm layers of standard foam, next is a 2cm layer of memory foam, followed by a 2cm layer of standard foam. The layers are all wrapped up in a soft-knit polyester cover, but this isn't removable for washing.
It’s delivered from EZE vacuum packed in a box, which makes it much easier to get to the room of your choice. However, you’ll need to unwrap and unroll the mattress and leave it for a while to fully expand.

Sealy Posturepedic Elevate Blackwood (Firm)

We don't like: The cover isn’t removable, or washable but Sealy suggests treating spills and stains as soon as possible with a sponge or damp cloth.
Got a bad back? Sealy says its Posturepedic Elevate Blackwood double mattress will ‘soothe out pesky aches’, offering ‘blissful pressure relief’ thanks to its ‘unique spring system’.
At its core you’ll find 18cm of iron springs, below this there’s a layer of foam, and on top of the core you’ll find five different layers of foam including 2cm of memory foam nearest the surface where you sleep.
Marketed as a firm mattress, in our independent tests we ranked this mattress as 5.4 on a scale where one is the firmest and 10 the softest, so it’s more towards the middle of the scale

How to spot a good deal on a mattress
Lisa Galliers, Which? mattress expert, says:
'Don't rush to buy a mattress purely because it's on sale, as there are plenty of discounts throughout the year. Some of the mattresses in this round-up have been available at the offer price for a while, but are still a good price.
'We've also tested a range of good-value mattresses from brands that don't usually offer discounts – so if you want to keep costs down, you can still pick up a decent model for a fraction of the price of some.'

How to get the best deals on specific mattress brands
Whether you're after a new double mattress or want to swap your old mattress for a new memory foam one, it's worth keeping an eye out for sales on your favourite brand's website. Social media can also be a good place to spot a bargain.
Offers come and go throughout the year, but the deals might not be on the particular mattress you want, so check the T&Cs.
Make sure you're ready when the discounts start. Compare mattresses to find out which ones will be a dream and which could turn into an expensive nightmare – and don't forget that retailers might have other sales in-store.
Dormeo mattress deals
You might have spotted Dormeo mattresses on TV or via ads popping up on Facebook – we've seen a range of deals available, along with free gifts such as pillows and duvets on top of existing price reductions. Although its mattresses can be found through other retailers, in the past we've noticed that buying direct from Dormeo can sometimes save you a small amount in addition to any free gifts it may be offering.
We'd suggest you check the website as a starting point. We've seen discounts of up to 60% in the past.

Emma mattress deals
The Emma Original mattress used to be one of the most popular models on the Which? website. But while it scored well in our lab tests overall, we're not currently recommending any Emma mattresses as Best Buys because the brand is being taken to court by the Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) regulator over its online sales practices.

Eve mattress deals
Another bed-in-a-box mattress brand, Eve is now owned by Bensons for Beds. You can find deals on the Eve Sleep website and at other retailers. It offers a 200-night sleep trial, so you can try out the mattress and, if you don't love it, send it back free of charge within 40 days.
As a guide, we've seen deals offering 20-30% off and up to as much as 50% on occasions. Check the T&Cs before you buy, as these discounts often apply only to certain models, if you spend above a particular amount or for new customers. Eve seems to swap deals fairly regularly between its mattresses.
Be warned, though – if you buy an Eve mattress via another retailer, such as Argos, the trial-nights offer might not apply.

Ikea mattress deals
You might not see Ikea mattresses on offer, but that's because they're generally good value for money at full price. We've got 12 of them on our website, ranging from £99 up to around £689, with an average price of £312.

Simba mattress deals
Simba is another brand that's often on offer. It's also been at the centre of a (now resolved) CMA investigation into sales tactics. Simba mattresses arrive vacuum-packed in a box to your door; the company offers free returns and its website states that it won’t ask you to get the mattress back in the box for the return journey.
We've spotted a range of deals from Simba offering 25-40% off. As a rule, 30-35% off is a good deal. Do check the T&Cs, though.

Are mattress sleep trials worth it?
Sleep trials – commonly offered by online-only, bed-in-a-box mattress brands – give you time to try out a mattress to see if it's the right one for you. If you don’t like it, you can return it within the trial period.
This can be useful if you're not sure which type of mattress will suit you best.
A long sleep trial lets you try your mattress during different seasons and gives you time to adjust, which is particularly important if you’re switching from springs to foam. If you experience back pain, for example, it could take a while to get used to a new mattress.
Not all sleep trials are the same, though, and some have strings attached.
If you're buying a mattress that offers a sleep trial, check the T&Cs first. See how many nights you'll be able to keep it for, whether you need to use a mattress protector and how to return it if it's not right for you.
Also, bear in mind that if you buy from a third-party retailer, the terms of a sleep trial – and whether it's offering one at all – might differ from those you get if you buy directly from the brand.

To find the best shops to buy a mattress, we surveyed 1,800 Which? Connect panel members in October 2023. We asked how satisfied people were with their shopping experience from mattress retailers, both in-store and online.
Our latest survey of the best mattress brands rates mattress shops including Emma, Eve, Ikea and John Lewis on the quality and range of their products, as well as on advice and delivery. It also reveals that Which? members are divided on where they shopped for their mattresses: 47% bought theirs in-store, while 53% shopped online.
