How we test kitchen scales

We test the most popular kitchen scales available at major UK retailers. We buy all products we test.
We regularly revisit the digital and mechanical scales on sale to see if there are any new and popular kitchen scales that need testing – and when we find them, we do.
Our tests have found scales tend to get a bit less accurate at heavier weights. The best are only off by a gram or two when you reach a kilogram; the worst by around 20g.
We've also found a bigger difference in how well scales measure liquids. The worst we've tested are off, even with small amounts such as 20ml.
Accuracy and consistency
- We use a set of calibration weights, from 1g up to 1kg, on every set of scales. We repeat this multiple times to see how accurate the scales are, and whether readings are consistent each time.
- We also use pipettes accurate to 0.1ml to see how well the scales weigh liquids.
- Our tests have found scales tend to get a bit less accurate at heavier weights.
- The best are only off by a gram or two when you reach a kilogram; the worst by around 20g.
- We've also found a bigger difference in how well scales measure liquids. The worst we've tested are off, even with small amounts such as 20ml.
Auto shut-off time
- We time how long each kitchen scale stays on before turning itself off.
- We do this with nothing on the scales, and then with weight on the scales.
- The best kitchen scales have a long auto shut-off time, so you don't have to frequently turn them back on and re-weigh ingredients.
Ease of use
- We assess how easy each scale is to use, noting useful features such as a clear display, easy navigation, responsive buttons and rubber feet.
- We penalise scales that are overly heavy, bulky or have one-step battery removal, because easy access to button batteries can be dangerous to young children if swallowed. Read more: Surprising things that could be dangerous to your child

The difference between a digital and manual kitchen scale

Manual or mechanical scales have a needle that moves when weight is added. They are less accurate and compact than digital (or electronic) weighing scales.
They look more traditional, so you may be drawn to getting one if you like the old-school aesthetic. However:
- Manual scales are usually less accurate. Manual ones only measure in steps of 20 to 25g. Digital scales display the exact weight measured, and can measure in 1g steps or less.
- Manual scales are fiddlier than electronic ones to tare (reset the scale to zero). With digital scales, you just press a button and it's done for you.
- The manual scales we've tested have very good consistency, so placing the same weight on the scale will send the needle to the same place on the dial each time. However, the accuracy of the reading is dependent on your judgement of where the needle is pointing.
How accurate are kitchen scales?

Our tests reveal digital kitchen scales are the most accurate type of weighing scales for your kitchen.
They measure in smaller increments and don't rely on you judging where the needle is pointing, as with a mechanical scale.
- The best kitchen scales only deviate by a few grams or less.
- Most scales we've tested are less accurate with liquids. Some can be off by as much as 30ml at higher volumes.
- Bright, clear displays and sensitive buttons really help with accurate measuring.
