It’s a good option if you have an unpredictable schedule. The pots are vacuum-sealed, giving them a naturally long shelf life of up to six months, so you can buy fresh ingredients when it suits you.

Make sure your food stays fresh with our guide: What temperature should a fridge be?
What's the difference between recipe boxes and meal kits?
Recipe boxes such as Hello Fresh, Gousto and Mindful Chef send you the ingredients and instructions to cook a meal from scratch – typically in around 20-40 minutes.
Often the ingredients are pre-measured and sometimes also peeled and chopped, which cuts out the hassle but still provides you with the cooking experience.
Meal kits require even less work and are more akin to ready meals (albeit fresh).
For example, you might just have to cook pasta or heat the ready-prepared dish – and this may take as little as 5-10 minutes.
However, we found that the terms are often used interchangeably, so read up on what you're going to get (including how much prep is required and how much time it will take) before you order.

Other meal-kit options include:
- Stocked – offers 'flexible food for your freezer' in the form of conveniently portioned blocks. You can choose between a subscription package (which unlocks limited-edition blocks voted in by customers) or a one-off order.
- Dishoom Store – a selection of meal kits inspired by the brand's physical stores. Options include naan roll kits and vegan options.
- Detox Kitchen – choose between daily deliveries or Resets, which are short three-to-five-meal plans delivered all at once.
- Planthood – all sauces are cooked from scratch using 100% natural ingredients, and the meals are designed with gut health in mind – they contain high-fibre fresh vegetables, fermented foods and polyphenols.
How to choose the best recipe box or meal kit for you

They can be helpful for people learning to cook or who struggle to get to the shops, such as people who work long hours or are less mobile. There's something for everyone out there when it comes to recipe boxes and meal kits. Here are some tips on how to choose:
- Take advantage of trial offers. Most providers offer generous introductory offers on your first and sometimes subsequent boxes, so be sure to take advantage of these. They're particularly helpful if you're undecided as to which provider to go for – or just to help you try out various cuisines more cheaply. For example, Hello Fresh is currently offering 60% off your first box and 20% off for two months, while SimplyCook has a month's free trial, and makes it relatively easy to pause or cancel your subscription. You can take advantage of trial offers to get a flavour of the different options.
- Do they cater to your needs? This could be to do with how many people you're ordering for (Mindful Chef and Gousto have one-person options, for example) and whether you have any specific dietary requirements. For example, do they offer gluten-free or keto/low-carb options, or perhaps they focus on simplifying eating for weight loss/weight maintenance? If you're looking for plant-based, there are also companies focusing on this offering, such as Grubby.
- How sustainable and 'green' are they? Factors such as organic veg, higher-welfare meat or the company having B-corp certification may be important to you, but not all of them have these eco-credentials. FAQ or 'about us' sections often reveal a lot about a company's values and how those are reflected in the products they sell.

How we tested recipe kits and meal boxes
The results are based on an online survey of 3,059 adults – members of the Which? Connect panel and members of the public – in June 2025, who had used recipe boxes or meal kits in the past two years.
We asked them to rate the companies they'd tried on a range of factors, including value for money, range/variety of recipes available, quality of food included in the boxes, portion sizes of meals, ease of placing and adjusting orders, and ease of pausing a subscription/skipping a box without having to cancel.
Our analysis is based on 5,652 different customer experiences, as some people had tried multiple companies.
The overall customer score is based on satisfaction and the likelihood of recommending the company to others. To give a company a rating, we needed a minimum of 30 responses. The sample sizes for each company are in brackets in the tables.
