How our tests find you the best
We've tested 15 robot vacs
No one wants to babysit their vacuum. We tested top brands and the latest features to find those that actually clean, without adding to your work.
Suction
We pit each robot against crushed cereal and real cat hair. The best suck up everything in their path and the worst leave dirt piles in their wake.
Obstacles
We put trailing wires, a rug, lamp base and table legs in the way of all the robot vacuum cleaners, mimicking the trickiest home layouts.
We also test...
...floor coverage, cleaning in corners, climbing ledges, noise and more.

How we test robot vacuum cleaners

We buy the bestselling robot vacuums and put them through our tough tests. We don't accept freebies from product manufacturers or retailers.
We regularly revisit the robot vacuum cleaners on sale to see if any more popular models need testing, and when we find them, we test them.
- Suction We test how effective each robot vacuum is at vacuuming crushed cereal on carpet and hard floor. We sprinkle a set amount, then weigh how much is vacuumed into the dust container to assess suction for each model.
- Pet hair The same test is carried out to see if each vacuum cleaner can suck up cat hair embedded in carpet.

- Obstacles We set up a small living room space with a lamp base, trailing wire, rug and side table to rate how well each robot vacuum deals with obstacles.
- Floor coverage We sprinkle lentils in our living room testing space and track the movement of each robot vacuum cleaner on camera to assess how much floor space they cover.

- Wall edges and corners To see if the robot vacuums can reach these tricky spots, we scatter crushed cereal 10cm away from the edge of a wall and in corners.
- Ledges If you have raised thresholds in your home, you'll want your robot vacuum to climb them so it can vacuum as much floor space as possible. We pit each robot vacuum against a 10mm step, increasing it by 2mm each time. The best can climb just over 2cm, while the worst can only just make it over 1cm.
- Noise We rate how noisy each robot vacuum is while cleaning.
- Mopping We test models that can mop on a sticky jam and honey stain to see how effective this function is.
In 2026, we updated our testing programme to better reflect your home. We now use crushed cereal instead of replica dust to replicate real-life debris, and lentils instead of flour to prevent vacuum cleaner blockages. Our Best Buy and Great Value recommendations, as well as the majority of the models reviewed, have been assessed using this new methodology. Our reviews state which year the product was tested.

Are robot vacuums worth it?
Some robot vacuums cost more than £1,000, so you'll want to be sure they'll leave your home free of dust without you lifting a finger. Unfortunately, our experience with robot vacuum cleaners suggests that, unless you choose carefully, you're likely to be underwhelmed.
Do they actually clean carpets?

Even the best robot vacuum cleaners can't match a standard vac for cleaning power on carpets.
Only a handful of the vacuums we tested did a decent job of sucking up food debris on carpet, while a few more were effective on hard floors. Join Which? to find out which models impressed.
While they can keep floors looking spick-and-span, they aren't a total replacement for a standard vacuum cleaner. Unless you live in the most minimalist of apartments, you'll still need to give your house a thorough going-over with a manual vac every so often.
Considering deep-cleaning your carpets? We've tested popular carpet cleaners from Bissell, Rug Doctor and Vax.
Can they cope with corners?

The round, bulky shape of most robot vacuums means they often struggle with corners and crevices.
Most come with brushes, which should sweep large bits of dirt and debris out from corners. For fine dirt or pet hair that's really embedded into corners, you'll be far better off with the nozzle attachment on a standard vacuum cleaner.
Join Which? to find out which robot vacuum cleaners were best at getting into corners.
Will they get stuck on obstacles?

Our tough tests show that while some robot vacuums navigate more seamlessly, others are painful to watch.
We found that even the smartest models using the most sophisticated sensor technology can get caught on loose cables, rugs and coffee table legs, so you'll need to robot-proof your home before a clean.
Most models use an app to map your home, allowing you to add no-go zones, virtual barriers, floor types and furniture. It may take some trial and error to fine-tune your map, but investing that time early on will help minimise hiccups and keep the robot moving.
If you have a particularly cluttered or otherwise tricky-to-negotiate home, you may find your robot vacuum will spend less time cleaning than you will freeing it from obstacles.
Do they work as a mop?
Some robot vacuum cleaners can mop your floors, too. This sounds fantastic – hands-free cleaning so you can forgo your mop and bucket. In reality, we found ourselves doing even more cleaning.
We pitted each robot vacuum against jam and honey. When we turned the robot vacuums over to clean them, we found the components congealed with the condiments. Even those with self-cleaning docks couldn't clear the grime. We then had to remove the brushes, dust containers and other components to give every appliance a thorough clean before setting it off again.
We'd only recommend using your robot vacuum to mop light spills and stains. Anything really messy isn’t worth the extra faff.
Find out which manual floor mops glided through our cleaning tests.
Are they more effort than they're worth?
A robot vacuum should save you time and effort, but they can be temperamental. We found that many don't follow a consistent route, ignore app instructions, and are prone to errors. Setting it up is the first hurdle; most robots only work on 2.4GHz wi-fi, meaning you may need to dive into your router settings just to get the machine online.
Ultimately, these are maintenance tools rather than total replacements for a manual vacuum. They excel in minimalist, hard-floor homes where they can run daily. However, if you have thick carpets, floor clutter, or a complex layout, the babysitting they require can quickly outweigh the time they save.
Unless you're prepared to spend some time with an instruction manual, you may want to consider one of the best vacuum cleaners or best cordless vacuum cleaners instead.
If you still want to make the switch, stick to our Best Buys. The gap between the best and the rest is huge, and a mediocre model will probably become a source of frustration and constantly need rescuing from under the sofa. Join Which? to find out which robot vacuum cleaners impressed.
What are the best features to look for when buying a robot vacuum?

The right features for you will depend on your home's size and floor types, but based on our testing, these are the most important features to consider.
Sensor technology The most basic robots use infrared sensors to avoid falling off edges and will simply change direction when they bump against an obstacle, rather than actively mapping their environment. While models with infrared sensors are more affordable, this random navigation often misses patches of floor. More sophisticated models use laser-guided scanners or a combination of cameras, sensors and 'virtual walls' to map out their cleaning environment, allowing the vacuum to clean in efficient rows. Some also include dirt sensors to ensure a thorough clean in high-traffic areas.
Beyond sensors, AI technology is now being heavily marketed. Some of the latest models claim to use cameras to spot a spill and then continue to scrub that area until it confirms the floor is clear. While these innovations are impressive (and pricey), reliable navigation and mapping remain the most important features for consistent cleaning.
App connectivity Using the app is key to getting the most out of your robot vacuum cleaner. It allows you to view a map of your home to set virtual no-go areas – keeping the robot away from cables, pet bowls, high-pile carpet – and to schedule vacuuming sessions. While the sophistication of the app will vary depending on the vac, most provide maintenance alerts, notifying you when to clean filters or replace brushes so your vacuum continues to do its job.
Cleaning modes The more you spend, the more choice of cleaning modes you'll get, but most people will still rely on 'auto' mode much of the time. In this mode, you programme the robot to automatically move around a space until the job is done or until it runs out of battery. Other modes include 'spot clean', which focuses on a particular area and 'boost' mode, which uses maximum suction power. When choosing a vacuum, think about the modes you're going to use. It's probably worth prioritising a robot that performs well on its standard auto setting rather than one with a long list of modes you're unlikely to use.
Brush type The brushes on your robot vacuum will determine how well it cleans and whether it can reach any tight spots. Sweeper brushes – spindly little brushes that rotate on the edge of the vacuum – may look ineffectual, but can be handy for directing dirt into the path of the vacuum or from troublesome corners.

Mop function Some robot vacuums have a water tank and detachable mop pads so they can tackle stains on hard floors. These pads are often made from microfibre, so you can chuck them in the washing machine to clean them. However, we found robot mops struggle with stubborn stains and aren't a replacement for a manual mop.
Battery life Most robot vacs come with a docking station that they automatically return to when they need charging. Make sure you check how long the robot takes to charge before you can send it off on another mission, as we've found that this can vary between models. While long battery life is good, it’s only important if the robot is smart enough to use it efficiently without getting stuck or lost.
Dust capacity The bins inside robot vacuum cleaners have a smaller capacity than standard bagged and bagless vacs. Most newer models have self-emptying docks, which suck debris into a larger bag so you only have to empty it every month or two. These docks are bulky, so if you lack floor space, choose a standalone robot with a larger internal canister (at least 0.5L) to avoid mid-clean interruptions.
