You get quite a lot of hi-tech features for this very reasonably priced LG. It has built-in wi-fi and Bluetooth, so it can be controlled using the LG ThinQ app on a smartphone or via Google Home Assistant. The app allows you to download additional programs, save your favourite settings and monitor the machine’s energy use.

Notable programs include a tub clean option to keep the machine fresh inside, and a downloadable steam setting that aims to remove allergens and bacteria as well as reduce creases. LG also promises that the load sensors automatically tailor the programs to take account of how much laundry is inside the drum.

Not only does this Hoover washing machine offer the usual selection of standard and rapid programs, it also has smart connectivity, which allows you to choose from around 50 additional cycles using an app on your smartphone. 

It's a larger capacity machine too, with a 12kg cottons wash, and 6kg synthetics program making it suitable for households that generate plenty of laundry on a regular basis.

The LG F4X7011TWB washing machine wouldn’t look out of place in even the most modern kitchen thanks to its sleek, futuristic design. It has a generous 11kg capacity making it a good choice for a busy home.

The fastest program washes 2kg of clothing in 14 minutes, while the ‘TurboWash’ option can tackle 5kg in 39 minutes. You can also use the Allergy Care setting if you have sensitive skin and there’s an AI feature that aims to personalise each cycle based on the load.

This machine is wi-fi connected, so you can use the LG ThinQ app on your smartphone to remotely start and stop your loads, as well as monitor energy use. It comes with a five-year guarantee.

This is a significant price drop on this 10kg-capacity AEG washing machine.

Part of the ProSteam line, it offers a Steam Refresh cycle, which AEG claims uses steam to neutralise odours and reduce wrinkles – ideal if your clothes just need a quick refresh.  

The 12 wash programs cover the typical cycles like cottons, synthetics and delicates, but you can also choose from more specialised options for fabrics like woollens or outerwear. There’s a 20-minute quick wash for smaller 3kg loads, too.

How to spot a good deal on a washing machine

Rebecca Jakeman, Which? washing machine expert, says: More often than not, paying more for a washing machine doesn't guarantee exceptional cleaning performance. In fact, models with higher price tags tend to offer extra features instead, such as 'smart' capabilities and more washing programs – so there's no need to pay above the odds if you don't want to.

How much do you need to pay for a washing machine?

Some washing machines cost less than £300, while others stretch well over the £1,000 mark.

Which? testing shows that you’re more likely to end up with a Don’t Buy than a Best Buy if you spend less than £300.

You usually have to pay more than £500 to get a Best Buy. With this budget, you can choose between a variety of Best Buys, ranging from small to large, freestanding and integrated.

There are hidden gems to be found, however, so see the best cheap washing machines under £400. 

It's always a good idea to check our washing machine reviews before buying – the most expensive Don’t Buy we’ve found in our tests is nearly £580, which is an expensive mistake to make.

What extra washing machine costs should you consider?

1. Installation and delivery costs

Some retailers charge significantly more than others for delivery.

Some give you no choice over the date or time of the delivery, so you'll need to make sure you're at home that day.

AO charges the most we've seen for a quick delivery and a time slot of your choice – either morning (7am-12pm), lunch (10am-2pm) or afternoon (12-5pm). 

2. Disposal and recycling costs

Disposal costs start from around £20 from each retailer.

AO charges £30 to disconnect your old appliance, but most other retailers include this service in the installation cost of your new machine.

So AO's charge could add £30 to the total cost of your new freestanding appliance. However, your total costs could still be lower elsewhere, depending on the specific combination of services you require.  

Overall, it pays to be flexible about timings if you can. If you're unable to collect, install or disconnect your washing machine, there's not much you can do other than pay the additional fees, so keep that in mind and factor it into your total budget.

3. Energy running costs

Another cost you need to consider is the amount of energy used to run your washing machine.

Our expert testing has revealed big differences between models, with the most expensive-to-run costing more than four times as much to run as the cheapest.
