Why we test what we test

Find out how we decide which products and services to test at Which? and how our focus can shift as consumer needs change

You might have landed on this page because the content you're looking for no longer exists on our website or because you want to learn about how we select products and services.

We test a huge amount of products and services every year; almost 4,000 across over 100 different categories. We buy all of the samples ourselves and ship them to expert laboratories across the globe, where they perform rigorous, robust and comparative tests.

Read on for details on why we stop testing certain products and how you can suggest new ones. Alternatively, explore a full list of the product categories we currently cover.

Why do we stop covering certain product areas?

The in-depth (and expensive) nature of testing means it's crucial that we invest our time and resources where they will be of most benefit.

With that in mind, we regularly review the product types that we test. This can lead us to stop testing certain products, usually because consumer interest has declined or the product type has become obsolete.

In 2025, we stopped testing a number of smaller product categories, including cot mattresses, wine coolers and smart plugs. We keep existing reviews on our website until the information is no longer up to date, at which point we remove them to avoid giving inaccurate recommendations.

As part of the same review process, we also consider new product areas to test. Over the past year, we’ve started reviewing toothpaste, running shoes and wet razors, and in response to consumer demand, we’ve increased the number of products we test in popular areas such as dash cams and child car seats.

How we select products and services to test

We have a dedicated team of analysts who carefully scour the market to decide which products and services we should review. We can’t test everything, but our analysts help us focus on the areas that matter most, such as widely used services, such as broadband and mobile phone deals, or popular products people rely on every day.

Of course, we also ask you what products and services you’d like us to put to the test. Look out for our ‘Have your say’ member emails.

Working for you

As well as taking your advice on what we should test or survey next, we also ask how you use products and services, so they’re assessed based on what matters most to you.

The more members we have, the more products and services we’re able to test. Membership also helps fund our campaigning work to make the UK a fairer place for consumers.
