We like: Easy to rotate
We don't like: Mattresses with foam layers can sometimes feel warmer to sleep on
The Eve Original mattress has been around for a while, but it’s back on sale after a brief pause for a design refresh.
It has a 16cm standard polyurethane foam core, on top of which sits a 3cm layer of viscoelastic memory foam and a further 3.5cm layer of foam. It has a removable polyester cover that is a doddle to unzip, remove and wash at 40°C; this is helpful for people who want to wash the cover to help keep dust mites and allergens at bay.
Eve describes this mattress as medium fitness, and in our own tests, it ranked 5.1 on a scale where one is the firmest and 10 the softest, so we’d agree.

Get a double mattress for £191 at Argos.
We like: The 100-night sleep trial
We don't like: There's a high memory effect which some people don't like
If you're after a basic foam mattress then this ever-popular Simba foam mattress is worth a look. It's already a low-priced Simba mattress that's sold via Argos, but at the moment you can get 20% off so it's less than £200 for a double.
The simple structure has a 12cm layer of dense base foam on which a 2cm layer sits and it's one-sided so you don't need to flip it over. The cover has a zip but it's not intended to be removed, so you can't take it off for washing.
Our lab experts rated it as 6.1 for softness, based on a scale form 1 (very firm) to 10 (very soft). We found that the foam layers do suck you in a little bit. Some people don't like this feeling, but it does help to absorb movement across the mattress.

We like: It has a 100-night sleep trial
We don't like: It's rather bouncy
Black Friday is long over, but this mattress is still on offer. It's a good price for this mattress, but we've seen it before, so don't be pressured into buying straight away.
This is quite an unusual hybrid mattress as the foam layer is much thicker than the springs - usually it's the other way around. Its 17cm foam base has a 4cm layer of pocket springs above it, followed by a further 3cm section of memory foam on top, closest to the side you lie on.
The manufacturer classes it as a medium-firm mattress and our tests agreed with this description. It has a removable washable mattress cover, which can help you banish those allergy-causing dust mites from the bedroom.

We like: It's breathable
We don't like: The cover isn’t removable for washing
Designed for people who sleep on their backs or fronts, the Arthur Sleep Royal Arthur is marketed with a firmer feel, featuring 3,000 pocket springs and foam layers, including a gel foam layer. Mattressman says this is a cooler alternative to memory foam and offers similar ‘pressure-relieving qualities’.
The mattress arrives rolled up and vacuum packed, like many do nowadays, making it easy to move to your bedroom. It will need some time to fully expand to its original shape.
In our independent firmness tests, we rated it 6.8 on a scale from 1 (firmest) to 10 (softest).

We like: It's easy to turn over on
We don't like: Mattresses with foam layers can sometimes feel warmer to sleep on
A bed-in-a-box foam mattress from Eve with an 18.5cm foam core, a 2cm layer of foam on top of the core, and two further layers of memory foam (3cm each). Eve says one is a brand-new pressure relieving foam and the other is graphite infused memory foam to help keep you cool.
There’s a removable polyester cover that's washable, so cleaning up spills or accidents is much easier.
Eve now describes the mattress as firm rather than medium, like the last version. We ranked it 5.7 in our latest independent firmness tests on a scale where one is firmest and 10 is softest.

We like: The long sleep trial
We don't like: It's very difficult to lift and turn
The Rem-Fit Sleep 600 Lux Hybrid mattress claims to offer you the dual benefits of comfortable, motion-isolating, pressure-relieving memory foam, and the support of individually responsive, spine-aligning pocket springs.
It's constructed with a main 16cm micro-pocket spring core surrounded by a shredded polyurethane foam. A second 2cm mini pocket spring core is topped by a 3cm visco-elastic memory foam layer.
REM-Fit describes the tension of this mattress as medium-firm. In our independent tests we rated it as 4.9, on a scale from 1 (very firm) to 10 (very soft).
A 200-night sleep trial is offered when purchased direct from REM-Fit, so you can try it out, and return if you're not satisfied. You'll need to sleep on it for at least 30 nights but if you don't like it then you can return for a refund. REM-Fit will collect it for free. REM-Fit donates returned mattresses, which are clean and unused, to the British Heart Foundation, to sell through their network of UK based stores.

We like: The build quality is excellent
We don't like: There’s a slight memory effect which some may not like
A hybrid double mattress featuring two layers of springs – a large core and a layer of micro springs – plus layers of pressure-relieving foam that the manufacturer says is breathable and helps to prevent overheating.
It comprises a 16cm micro-pocket spring core surrounded by and sandwiched between different foam layers. Underneath the spring core, you’ll find a 2.5cm layer of standard foam. On top of this core, there’s a 2cm micro spring layer, a 2.5cm layer of standard foam and a 5cm layer of HR PU memory foam that’s closest to the surface you lie on.
Rem-Fit describes the tension of this mattress as medium-firm. In our independent tests, we rated it as 7.7, on a scale of 1 (very firm) to 10 (very soft).
The polyester cover is removable and can be machine-washed at low temperatures. This is good for allergy sufferers as regular washing can help keep dust mites at bay.

Lisa Galliers, Which? mattress expert, says:
'Don't rush to buy a mattress purely because it's on sale, as there are plenty of discounts throughout the year. Some of the mattresses in this round-up have been available at the offer price for a while, but are still a good price.
'We've also tested a range of good-value mattresses from brands that don't usually offer discounts – so if you want to keep costs down, you can still pick up a decent model for a fraction of the price of some.'

Whether you're after a new double mattress or want to swap your old mattress for a new memory foam one, it's worth keeping an eye out for sales on your favourite brand's website. Social media can also be a good place to spot a bargain.
Offers come and go throughout the year, but the deals might not be on the particular mattress you want, so check the T&Cs.
Make sure you're ready when the discounts start. Compare mattresses to find out which ones will be a dream and which could turn into an expensive nightmare – and don't forget that retailers might have other sales in-store.
You might have spotted Dormeo mattresses on TV or via ads popping up on Facebook – we've seen a range of deals available, along with free gifts such as pillows and duvets on top of existing price reductions. Although its mattresses can be found through other retailers, in the past we've noticed that buying direct from Dormeo can sometimes save you a small amount in addition to any free gifts it may be offering.
We'd suggest you check the website as a starting point. We've seen discounts of up to 60% in the past.

The Emma Original mattress used to be one of the most popular models on the Which? website. But while it scored well in our lab tests overall, we're not currently recommending any Emma mattresses as Best Buys because the brand is being taken to court by the Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) regulator over its online sales practices.

Another bed-in-a-box mattress brand, Eve is now owned by Bensons for Beds. You can find deals on the Eve Sleep website and at other retailers. It offers a 200-night sleep trial, so you can try out the mattress and, if you don't love it, send it back free of charge within 40 days.
As a guide, we've seen deals offering 20-30% off and up to as much as 50% on occasions. Check the T&Cs before you buy, as these discounts often apply only to certain models, if you spend above a particular amount or for new customers. Eve seems to swap deals fairly regularly between its mattresses.
Be warned, though – if you buy an Eve mattress via another retailer, such as Argos, the trial-nights offer might not apply.

You might not see Ikea mattresses on offer, but that's because they're generally good value for money at full price. We've got 12 of them on our website, ranging from £99 up to around £689, with an average price of £312.
Not sure which one to go for? Head to the five most popular Ikea mattresses to narrow down your shortlist.

Simba is another brand that's often on offer. It's also been at the centre of a (now resolved) CMA investigation into sales tactics. Simba mattresses arrive vacuum-packed in a box to your door; the company offers free returns and its website states that it won’t ask you to get the mattress back in the box for the return journey.
We've spotted a range of deals from Simba offering 25-40% off. As a rule, 30-35% off is a good deal. Do check the T&Cs, though.

Sign upSleep trials – commonly offered by online-only, bed-in-a-box mattress brands – give you time to try out a mattress to see if it's the right one for you. If you don’t like it, you can return it within the trial period.
This can be useful if you're not sure which type of mattress will suit you best.
A long sleep trial lets you try your mattress during different seasons and gives you time to adjust, which is particularly important if you’re switching from springs to foam. If you experience back pain, for example, it could take a while to get used to a new mattress.
Not all sleep trials are the same, though, and some have strings attached.
If you're buying a mattress that offers a sleep trial, check the T&Cs first. See how many nights you'll be able to keep it for, whether you need to use a mattress protector and how to return it if it's not right for you.
Also, bear in mind that if you buy from a third-party retailer, the terms of a sleep trial – and whether it's offering one at all – might differ from those you get if you buy directly from the brand.
Read more about mattress sleep trials and find out which brand offers the longest.
Retailers also offer their own deals throughout the year. We've listed some retailers below to get you started. Check T&Cs for deals before you buy.
To find the best shops to buy a mattress, we surveyed 1,800 Which? Connect panel members in October 2023. We asked how satisfied people were with their shopping experience from mattress retailers, both in-store and online.
Our latest survey of the best mattress brands rates mattress shops including Emma, Eve, Ikea and John Lewis on the quality and range of their products, as well as on advice and delivery. It also reveals that Which? members are divided on where they shopped for their mattresses: 47% bought theirs in-store, while 53% shopped online.
