How our tests find you the best
We've tested 22 coffee cups and travel mugs
Our tough tests ensure your coffee stays hot and won't end up sloshing around at the bottom of your bag.
Temperature control
No one wants a tepid cup of tea or coffee, so we measure how long each travel mug and coffee cup keeps drinks hot.
Leakproofing
Who wants their drink down their front every time they take a sip? We stress test the lids so you can avoid coffee-stained clothes.
We also test...
How easy they are to drink from and clean, how they handle being dropped, and if residual flavours will make your drinks taste funny.

How we test travel mugs and reusable coffee cups

We regularly revisit the travel mugs and travel coffee cups on sale to see if there are any more popular models that need testing. When we find them, we do.
Temperature control
- We measure temperature retention by recording how much it drops every hour for four hours. We do this for double the time for travel mugs (eight hours) as they’re meant to retain heat better.
- Travel mugs are checked at the end of the day to see if they have managed to keep the drink warm or cool.
- We also use thermal imaging cameras to check if heat is escaping.
Leakproof and durability
- We check if each travel mug leaks by opening and closing the lid 100 times.
- We check if it will leak when held upside down or shaken.
- Each travel mug is dropped multiple times to see how easily they dent, and if spills can be prevented.
Ease of use and cleaning
- We assess each mug and cup for how easy it is to hold, and use Cambridge simulation gloves to see which ones are more comfortable for people with reduced hand mobility.
- We also rate how easy they are to drink from.
- We check how easy each travel mug and coffee cup is to wash by hand.
- We also test for any residual odour and/or excessive staining inside each product.
Taste
- To find out if any coffee cup or travel mug is holding onto residual flavours, we leave coffee in them for over eight hours before washing them out and making a cup of tea.
- A panel of taste testers then assess whether the tea tastes similar to a control sample made in a clean mug.

Reusable coffee cup or travel mug: which is right for you?

Reusable coffee cups
These are a reusable version of a disposable takeaway cup. They can cost less than £10, and go up to around £30 for pricier cups insulated with stainless steel.
Most have a capacity of around 350ml, which is enough for a regular-sized, shop-bought coffee.
Coffee cups aren't usually leakproof. They're designed for transporting coffee by hand over short distances and as a sustainable alternative to disposable cups.
Travel mugs
Prices range from £5 to around £35. They usually look more like a vacuum flask and are typically available in a regular 350ml size; some brands have larger options (450ml or more).
Most are designed to be leakproof, unlike reusable cups. However, our tests found that some still leak easily, even when advertised as 'leak-resistant'.
Go for a travel mug over a reusable cup if you want your drink to remain at the optimum temperature for more than a couple of hours.
Do travel mugs keep drinks cold? Yes, they're not only designed to keep your drinks warm for the entire day, they are also meant to keep drinks cool for just as long.
If you want a travel mug to sling into your backpack, and you'd like that backpack to still be dry at the end of your commute, your best bet is to read our reviews, above.
