No one visits a motorway service station for fun, but you'd hope to find better than some of the overpriced, underwhelming and dirty facilities, our survey revealed.
Four years after our last motorway services survey, your responses still paint a bleak picture of a network blighted by dated and inadequate service areas, many of which are filthy.
And while the motorway you're travelling on limits your options, our survey of thousands of members, rating nearly 90 service stations, revealed that stopping a few junctions earlier or later could make all the difference to what you'll find when you pull in.
Gloucester services on the M5, run by the Westmorland Family, is again the top-rated service station in the UK. From facilities and cleanliness to outside space, it was given five stars in nearly every category. All three Westmorland services scored highly and are worth staying on the road a few minutes more for.
For example, on the M6, stop at the Southwaite Moto at junctions 41-42 (41%), and you'll find low-quality shops, food outlets and potentially unclean toilets; it gained just two out of five stars in these categories.
But just two junctions earlier (38-39), top-scoring Westmorland services in Tebay (77%) offers clean loos, pleasant outdoor spaces, and plenty of choice for grabbing a cuppa or lunch, cooked from scratch. You might even pick up a last-minute gift or healthy snacks for the road in its excellent farm shop.

Use our table below to plan where to stop on your travels this summer – and where to avoid. And if you find yourself in desperate need of a loo near one of the UK's worst options, we've rounded up alternatives below.
Gloucester Services has defended its title once again as the UK’s best motorway services for 2025. The three Westmorland sites repeatedly top our survey because they are sparkling clean, have excellent facilities and outdoor spaces that are a pleasure to be in.
Westmorland Family Services is the table's only Which? Recommended Provider, and along with Gloucester Services includes Tebay Services and Cairn Lodge Services.
Runners up:
Westmorland’s Tebay outpost won second place in our survey, but for the first time, a service station from a nationwide brand finished in the top three: Rugby, by Moto.
Leeds Skelton Lake Services, run by Extra, was also rated highly. Both Rugby and Leeds Skelton Lake offer fast and plentiful EV charging points, clean facilities and outside spaces such as Rugby’s huge dog-walking area, and Leeds’ RSPB viewing platform over Skelton Lake. They represent a huge leap forward for owners Moto and Extra.
Leeds Skelton Lake is such a success that it even hosted its first wedding in December 2024.

USING THE TABLE Based on survey of 8,677 experiences from 4,078 Which? Connect members in Nov/Dec 2024. Sample sizes in brackets. A dash (-) means sample size too small for a rating. Table includes motorway service areas and rest areas. Star ratings for shops and food and drink refer to both range and quality. Convenience and accessibility Ease of parking, signposting, disabled access, length of queues etc. Outside space Means picnic areas, dog-walking space, children’s playgrounds etc. Customer score Based on overall satisfaction and likelihood of recommending.
A service station that you look forward to going to and plan your journey around, according to some readers? It’s hard to believe. But Westmorland, the family-run business behind Gloucester, Tebay and Scotland’s Cairn Lodge, has always done things a bit differently.
You won’t find any fast-food chains or franchises. Instead, there’s a farm shop with locally sourced produce and a kitchen cooking meals from scratch, including hearty meat and veg dinners to lunchtime flatbreads and vegan pancakes.
It’s easy on the eye too – seemingly built into the hill and overlooking a lake. People who live nearby told us they visit just to walk the dog, fill up or charge the car, and to shop. 'From the fresh sourdough to the funky clothes, there’s always something that takes my fancy’, we were told.
Verdict: A true destination service station.
Despite its lovely lakeside location, don't be tempted to stop at the mediocre services at Killington Lake (58%) if you're driving north on the M6. Just 12 miles up the road, you’ll find Tebay Services (run by the same company as Gloucester), located on a working farm in the Cumbrian hills. Unlike Killington, the services do justice to their setting.
Parking is easy, it’s impeccably clean and spacious. And, just like the Gloucester outpost, Tebay got five stars out of five for its range and quality of shops and food and drink outlets. Hungry visitors will be pleased to discover there’s freshly prepared food on offer. If you’re after a ‘real knife-and-fork meal’, Herdwick lamb, homemade Cumberland sausages or steak and ale pie are likely to be on the menu, along with plentiful (and genuinely appetising) vegetarian and vegan options. Meanwhile, Penrith fudge and a huge range of other local produce can be bought from the farm shop.
Other amenities include free wi-fi, free and accessible shower facilities and a kids' soft-play area. Pets can enjoy some respite, too, with secure walking routes around the station and water bowls and waste bins provided.
Verdict: First-rate, family-run rest stop.
This year, Extra’s Leeds Skelton Lake services ousted Moto’s Donnington services for the title of best service station on the M1. It also came in fifth in our ranking of UK service stations, with a customer score of 68%. Meanwhile, Donnington slipped to 10th, scoring 55% overall.
Leeds Skelton got more stars than Donnington in every category, and full marks for its convenience and accessibility (one of only three stations – and the only non-Westmorlands brand – to do so). So, if you're heading north on the M1, planning to stop off here might make for a more pleasant break.
With a customer score of 51%, Reading Moto is the best of a bad bunch on the M4.
Westbound, there’s a 24-hour Marks and Spencer, Costa and WH Smith, a Burger King that’s open from 7am until the early hours, along with a Gregg’s, Pret A Manger, KFC and a couple of other fast food options. Eastbound offers similar options, although the Marks and Spencer isn’t 24 hours, nor is the Burger King.
Our previous M4 winner, Leigh Delamere, scored identically in all categories and got only one percentage point less overall. Both scored an abysmal one star for pricing. Our advice? Pick the station that’s most convenient for you location-wise – but if you’re heading west and need sustenance in the middle of the night, you may have more luck at Reading.
Verdict: Reading just scrapes the best on the M4, despite average shops, food and drink offerings and one star for its prices.

Despite a 56% customer score, Beaconsfield Services has maintained its title as the best motorway on the M40, according to Which? readers. It scored four stars for the range and quality of its food and drink outlets, and three stars for cleanliness, convenience, facilities and range of shops.
As well as the usual dining options, including McDonald’s, KFC and Greggs, there’s also a Leon, Pizza Express, JD Wetherspoon, Nando’s and a couple of street-food franchises offering noodles and Mexican fare.
If you're after a quick stop, there’s also a drive-through Starbucks. But it scored just two stars for prices and the outside space on offer, although it does offer picnic areas, secure walking trails and an outdoor seating overlooking a lake. Other amenities include meeting rooms, showers, free wi-fi, a play area, and a large TV showing sports.
There's an Ibis Budget hotel attached to the service station if you decide to stay overnight. See how Ibis Budget performed in our survey of UK hotel chains.
Verdict: Not spectacular, but not bad if you need to stop.
While its 50% score from visitors in our survey is fairly average, Cobham Services is the best option on the M25, and has plenty to offer drivers seeking respite from the motorway, with its lakeside terrace and a wide choice of places to refuel.
It scored four stars from Which? readers for its range and quality of food outlets, of which there are 13, including McDonald’s, KFC, Greggs and Starbucks, as well as a Pizza Express, Nando’s, Leon and Pret A Manger – although it too scored just one star for its prices. Which? members gave it three stars for its convenience and accessibility, cleanliness and range of facilities and shops – you’ll find wi-fi, shower facilities, washing machines and meeting rooms, should you need them.
And if you decide to stay overnight, the service station is attached to the Ramada by Wyndham Cobham hotel.
Verdict: The M25 is not well-served by service stations. This is your best bet.
Scotland’s best motorway service station is also a Westmorland Family offering, offering the same high-quality food and drink the franchise is famous for. The menu is typically full of crowd pleasers, whether you’re starting your road trip with a hot Scottish breakfast, or stopping off for a dinner of freshly cooked lasagne or battered fish and chips.
There’s also a deli counter if you’re in a rush – and it wouldn’t be a Westmorland Family establishment without a farm shop selling speciality produce from more than 100 producers, local and from across Scotland.
With four stars for its shops, facilities and accessibility and convenience, Cairn Lodge will set you up well for the journey ahead. It’s also one of the few stations that scored three for its prices – the highest we saw in this survey.
Verdict: Westmorland Family top quality, with thoughtful nods to its Scottish setting.
The Westmorland family’s three boutique service stations of Gloucester, Tebay and Cairn Lodge remain in the top five in this year’s table – but they’re being challenged by Rugby’s new Moto station, which this year ranked third, with 75%.
To get to Bridgwater Services from the M5, there are two roundabouts to navigate. This is your chance. Turn around. You don’t deserve this. Nobody deserves Bridgwater. To save space, developers appear to have squeezed these services into a tiny industrial estate, with inadequate parking in a poorly lit multi-storey car park that gets jammed up with bewildered motorists trying to escape.
If you do manage to park, you’ll find unwelcoming, cramped and overpriced facilities that ‘look and feel filthy’ and toilets that ‘smelt of stale urine’, according to some quotes from our survey. Don’t even think about grabbing a bite – more than half of visitors in our survey rated the food and drink at Bridgwater as poor.
What connects Bridgwater with many of the ailing services rated worst in the UK? Nine out of the 10 sites at the bottom of the table are run by Moto, the UK’s largest service area operator.
We asked it why – if it has such a hit on its hands at Rugby – it hasn’t invested more in sites that are showing their age.
Moto told us: ‘We have invested £55m refurbishing our service stations and building new sites over the past two years. A Transport Focus study, conducted in the summer of 2023, revealed that 94% of respondents were either satisfied or fairly satisfied with their experience at Moto’s sites. This study had seven times more respondents than Which?. Our refurbishment programme is extensive and focused on older MSAs, and has achieved some key targets such as 75% of our toilets being revamped in the last five years. Bridgwater scored 88% in the Transport Focus study, and has been upgraded in the past two years, since the Which? panel respondents started visiting our sites.’
Verdict: ‘Time for a demolition job’, as one reader put it.
Instead, go to…
Gloucester Services, the UK’s best service station is an hour’s drive north of Bridgwater. If you are not going that way, Sedgemoor South Services, 15 minutes north of Bridgwater – scored 52% overall, and where Bridgwater scored just one star for cleanliness, facilities, convenience and the range and quality of food and drink and shops on offer, Sedgemoor South scored three. A significantly better services.
