Best breakdown cover_ 442530

Green Flag was formed in 1971 as an alternative to the AA and RAC. It uses a network of local garages and mechanics to provide recovery and repair services, rather than patrolling mechanics.

Green Flag became part of the Direct Line Group, which also includes insurance brands Direct Line and Churchill, in 1999. Green Flag is now one of the largest breakdown providers in the UK.

It's also one of the cheaper breakdown providers we analysed - read on to find out whether Green Flag's customers think its service is good value for money.

Does Green Flag provide European breakdown cover?

Green Flag's Euro Plus policy will cover you for an unlimited number of trips up to a total of 90 days per year and cover you for up to to £250 for roadside assistance and recovery to a suitable repairer.

If your car can't be fixed locally that day, Green Flag will cover up to £850 for a hire car and £500 for hotel accommodation (maximum of £45 per person per day).

How do I contact Green Flag?

If you are unfortunate enough to have broken down, you can call Green Flag for assistance on 0800 400 600.

You can also report a breakdown by using the Green Flag app. You can then track the progress of the breakdown patrol vehicle on your mobile phone.

How do I cancel my Green Flag breakdown cover?

If you wish to cancel your breakdown cover or membership, contact Green Flag Customer Services on 0843 557 3414.

A cancellation fee of £11.20 will apply if you cancel outside of the 14-day cooling-off period.

If you cancel your policy within 14 days of taking it out, you will receive a full refund of your premium as long as you haven't made a claim during the policy period.

If you cancel after 14 days and have paid annually for your RAC breakdown cover, you will be refunded based on the remaining period of the policy, as long as you haven't made a claim during the policy period.

Unfortunately, you cannot put your Green Flag breakdown policy on hold if, for instance, you buy a new car and subsequently receive free breakdown from the manufacturer.
