Our pick: Lord of the Rings: Barad-Dûr 10333

Watch out for: 83cm tall — may struggle to fit it on a shelf

One of Lego's tallest sets ever, this is a recreation of Lord Sauron's fortress in Mordor. It's got a fully furnished interior and comes with 10 minifigures including Frodo, Samwise, Gollum, and a handful of Uruk-hai soldiers.

At the top of this towering set features a poseable Eye of Sauron that can light up, too. Just know that the back of this build is exposed, so it might be best displayed against a wall.

While it's not the cheapest we've seen it go for, we still think this is a great bargain on this popular set.

Our pick: Millennium Falcon UCS 75192

Watch out for: A bit smaller than the older 2010 and 2005 sets

This popular clone starfighter has been reissued with more pieces, but as a slightly smaller size. You'll get three clone pilot minifigures and a R4-P44 droid. 

The wing can open and close on the ship, and it comes equipped with two cannons.

Watch out for: Only comes with one minifigure

This scaled-down model of the iconic wizarding school might not be the biggest set, but it's still packed with lots of details. 

There are miniature dioramas of scenes that take place in the castle and its surrounding spaces; including the Chamber of Secrets, the Whomping Willow (complete with the Weasley's Ford Anglia), the potions classroom, and more.

Our pick: Lilo and Stitch Beach House 43268

Watch out for: Back of build is exposed

This Hawaiian beach house is the home of Lilo and her mum, Nani, and has six furnished rooms packed with references to the film. You'll get minifigures of Lilo and Stitch (of course), plus Nani, David, and Mr. Bubbles.

It's the cheapest we've seen it go for this month, making it the best Disney Lego deal.

Our pick: Planet Earth and Moon in Orbit 42179

Watch out for: Not motorised

This space set features a model of the earth and moon orbiting around the sun. With the turn of a crank, it'll show how our home planet and moon spin circles around the sun which sits in the centre of the model.

You can even see the phases of the moon on a small dial just under where the moon rotates. Just be sure you place the stickers of the moon phases on in the correct places.

We're going to be honest; there's not many good deals on Marvel sets currently. This is the best one we found. This Spiderman set features a facade of the New York City street that the ominous (although maybe a bit short) Oscorp building is on.

Next door, there's Miles Morales' apartment, and right around the corner is Venom's flat, too – who knew that they were neighbours?

This catamaran comes decked out with a boat-load of play features that's bound to give ultra-luxurious yachts a run for their money.

When is Lego discounted?

It's likely that throughout the year many retailers will have their own deals going on. Plus, Lego itself may have some deals themselves — especially on sets that are going to be discontinued soon. You can check Lego's deal page, and check which sets are being retired soon from their website.

How can I save money on Lego sets?

While we can't put a firm number on how much a set is typically discounted, there are usually several on sale throughout the year, so we'll keep an eye out and update this page with the best deals we find.

You'll typically find most deals from third-party retailers instead of Lego themselves. While you'll usually get some extra goodies thrown in when you buy direct, it may not be worth the the extra savings.

Where can I buy discounted Lego sets?

At the moment, most Lego deals can be found on Amazon, Argos, Smyth's Toys and Very. They'll often sell Lego sets cheaper than on Lego's own website.

As a general rule of thumb, paying 10p per brick/part is a pretty typical price for Lego. Branded and franchised Lego sets like Star Wars, Disney, Mario, Marvel, and Harry Potter tend to be a bit more expensive – at around 11 to 12p per brick.

Lego's own-branded set lines that don't use as many set-specific parts like Icons, Ideas, Classic, Modular buildings, and Creator – will tend to cost around 7 to 8p per brick.

Should I buy direct from Lego?

You can find some discounts direct from Lego, but it's still one of the more expensive options. You can see which sets have been discounted on Lego's website.

Lego isn't cheap – to make or to buy. While you can generally get sets cheaper by buying from other retailers, there are still perks to picking up your pieces from Lego itself.

Sometimes when you order directly from the Lego store (either online or in person), you'll get a small bonus set when you spend past a certain threshold or buy a certain set. The bonus gift tends to change each month, and sometimes you can even get multiple gifts. Keep track of the bonus free sets on Lego's website.
