How Which? tests Champagne and sparkling wine

We asked a range of supermarkets to nominate one own-brand or exclusive non-vintage brut white Champagne and one own-label or exclusive brut white sparkling wine. We limited the price of Champagnes to £35 and the sparkling wines to between £6.75 and £20. We also included a few famous brands and five English sparkling wines - we put them above, with the Champagnes, because of the parity in prices.

All prices were correct at the time of publishing, but look out for special Christmas and New Year deals.

We disguise all of the bottles in black plastic bags to ensure complete impartiality and fairness, and then ask a panel of external wine experts to taste them. Each expert tries the wines in a different order and takes notes as they go. The experts then discuss their tasting notes and agree on a score for each bottle.

This year our wine experts were: Charles Metcalfe, author, wine and food speaker and co-chairman of the International Wine Challenge (IWC); Derek Smedley MW, Master of Wine since 1968; Peter MCombie MW, speaker, wine consultant and co-chairman of the IWC; Kathryn McWhirter, author and wine writer; and Joanna Simon, award-winning writer whose experience includes 22 years as the Sunday Times' wine critic.
