UK households could save millions of pounds a year if they all switched to the most energy efficient appliances, according to a new report from charity Global Action Plan (GAP).
Large appliances, such as washing machines and fridges, account for 42% of household electricity use. But we’re not always buying the most energy efficient appliances, which could save us hundreds over the lifetime of an appliance.
For instance, if all the consumers who bought an A rated fridge freezer in 2011 had bought an A+++ rated one instead, they would have saved £24 million a year and 100,000 tonnes of carbon. That’s equivalent to taking 33,000 cars off the road.
Which? energy cost calculators
Which? has created energy cost calculators that tell you how much each appliance costs to run for a year and how much it will cost over the lifetime of the product.
For instance, the fridge freezers energy costs calculator reveals that the best annual running cost is £15 and the worst is £76, that’s a potential £610 saving over ten years.
The dishwashers running costs calculator shows that the best annual running cost is £22 and the worst £68, a possible £460 difference over ten years.

Energy efficiency label shopping tips
The following products legally have to display energy information, so if you can’t see it, ask for it:
- Washing machines, washer-dryers and tumble dryers
- Fridges, freezers and fridge freezers
- Electric ovens
- Energy-saving light bulbs
- Air conditioners
Be aware that the ratings now go up to A+++ for some appliances, so even if an appliance is A rated it may not be the most efficient sort.
If you’re comparing two appliances with the same rating, look more closely at the annual energy consumption found on the label to find which of the two uses the least electricity. For more buying advice see our guide to EU energy labels.
