Many appliance repairers will charge an initial call-out fee that typically covers the first hour – and is likely to be more if they live at a distance – followed by an hourly rate, depending on how long the job takes.
Call-out charges will vary depending on your region, and can range from £45-£150. Hourly rates tend to be lower. Make sure you ask your repairer upfront about their charges.

The cost of appliance parts
At Which?, we always encourage people to repair rather than replace, so that white goods don't end up in landfill unnecessarily. But spare parts can be expensive.
If the trader needs to use parts during the repair, discuss the cost of these in advance so that you can weigh up whether it’s worth repairing your faulty appliance or replacing it instead.
Most traders can offer you a choice between genuine parts (manufacturer approved) or generic ‘pattern’ parts, which usually cost much less. Whichever you choose, ensure your new part comes with a warranty.

Trader vs manufacturer repair
If you have a fault with your machine, you might be wondering whether you should call the manufacturer and get a repair for free as opposed to calling in a sole trader. The first thing to think about is whether the machine is still covered by a guarantee or warranty.
Guarantees are essentially an assurance that the manufacturer will repair or replace the product if it doesn’t live up to the quality or lifespan claimed. They are free, but you’re often required to fill out a registration card to validate it.
Warranties, which often cost but can last longer than a guarantee, may offer wider protection, such as in cases of accidental damage.
If the issue happens while one of these is still in place, you should contact the manufacturer. Do check the terms and conditions first to see exactly what the guarantee or warranty covers – they don’t always apply to everything.
Even if you don’t have one of these, you do have statutory rights to a repair or replacement if the product doesn’t live up to its promises, depending on how long you have had it.
If you decide to use an independent appliance professional while a guarantee or warranty is still valid, just be aware that this may void them. It’s the same if you attempt to repair it yourself.
