Deals on older iPhones and second-hand iPhones
We recommend sticking to the iPhone 14 or newer if you're considering an older model. It all comes down to software support; older models stop receiving major iOS updates much sooner. That means you’ll miss out on new features and, more importantly, could be left without critical security patches to protect your data.
The iPhone 13 is a tougher call. It’s still a capable phone, so if you spot one at a rock-bottom price, it’s certainly tempting. Just be aware that its software support will likely end in under two years, meaning you'll be shopping for an upgrade again before you know it.
This is where exploring the refurbished market can be a brilliant strategy. For our expert tips on how to get a great deal on an older phone safely, read on.
Best second-hand iPhone deals
Before buying an iPhone, consider looking at the second-hand and refurbished market, as this is often where the best savings can be found. iPhones dominate this market, which means prices are competitive.
When buying second-hand, double-check that the phone is still supported with security updates. If it's no longer supported, hackers could exploit vulnerabilities in its software. Some second-hand retailers, such as MusicMagpie, will warn you in the specifications if a phone no longer has security support – but many won't. Use the Which? phone support calculator to find out how long you can expect to get support.
Second-hand phones are sold with a grade based on their condition. Our research shows that a grade B (or equivalent 'good') will generally get you the best deal, balancing price with the quality of features.

Our pick: Apple iPhone 14 (original price £799, now around £310 second-hand)

The iPhone 14 series from 2022 has seen some major discounts in the second-hand market. It doesn't have the advanced cameras of an iPhone Pro, but it doesn't scrimp on specs: you'll get Apple's A15 Bionic Chip, a striking display and clever camera modes. We expect Apple to support it with regular security updates until at least September 2028.
We've seen it on sale for around £310 in 'good' second-hand condition at MusicMagpie. Find out the full story in our Apple iPhone 14 review.
How to spot a good deal on an iPhone
Adam Speight, Which? mobile phones expert, says:

- iPhone deals are scarce and you're likely to get the best offers by choosing an iPhone that's not in the latest range. If you do find a discount on a recent iPhone, consider it a good deal if you're getting around 20% off.
- Avoid buying an iPhone that's likely to lose its security updates soon. Sometimes, phones can look like they're a great deal, but a much older model might be at risk of losing important security updates fairly soon after you buy it. Security updates and patches are important to keep your data safe. We only recommend deals on iPhones (see above) that we estimate have at least two years of security patches remaining.
- Decide what's most important to you in your new phone. Cameras generally account for the biggest expense, but you might find that the priciest camera features aren't important to you.

How much is the latest iPhone compared to older models?
iPhones are typically expensive, and it's unusual to see significant discounts on the latest iPhones soon after launch. The good news is you can make savings with predecessors, many of which have plenty of life left thanks to Apple's long support periods. For example, while the iPhone 17 launched at the same price as the iPhone 16, you can now find deals on the latter.
Will there be any good Black Friday iPhone deals this year?
While you can find tech deals all year, genuinely good iPhone offers are rare because Apple hardly ever discounts its own products. This makes big sales events like Black Friday the best time to find a bargain.
However, not all deals are as good as they seem. We'll help you spot the real savings. The best discounts are usually on slightly older iPhones, so look for deals on the iPhone 14, 15, and 16 series from retailers like Amazon, John Lewis, and Currys.

How to get the most money for an old iPhone
If you're about to buy a new iPhone, there are some simple ways to get cash for your old one.
- Apple Trade In Apple takes your device and swaps it for credit towards your next purchase or offers you an Apple gift card. If your device isn't eligible (perhaps it's damaged beyond repair), Apple will recycle it for you. The Apple Trade In website has a list of price estimates for iPhone models. You can trade in the iPhone 12 for up to an estimated £120 and the iPhone 13 for £190. You can return your old device using a pre-paid trade-in kit that Apple sends, or take it to an Apple store.
- Third-party sellers If you want cash instead of credit, consider trading in your old iPhone to a third-party seller. MusicMagpie offers up to £195 for an iPhone 12 (64GB, unlocked) and £195 for an iPhone 13 (128GB, unlocked). CeX offers up to £110 for an iPhone 12 and £147 for an iPhone 13.
- Mobile phone providers trade-in You can also trade in your phone to mobile phone providers such as O2, Vodafone, EE and Three. They either offer credit towards your next purchase or cash.
- Recycling comparison websites Some websites such as Compare and recycle and Sellmymobile.com will compare offers for your phone to help you find the best deal.
- eBay You're likely to get the most money by selling your old phone independently through an online marketplace such as eBay, though this requires more effort on your part to manage the sale and delivery.
Before parting ways with your old phone, back up your phone's data or transfer it to your new phone so you don't lose anything. Then erase your data by performing a 'factory reset', which can be found in your phone's Settings.
