The only way to tell if a pizza oven is good is to cook on it, which is just what our researchers do for our first-look reviews.

How well does the pizza oven cook?

We cook more than six pizzas in each pizza oven, using home-made pizza dough. We include simple cheese-and-tomato pizzas as well as ones with toppings, such as salami and ham.

We taste and rate all the food we cook, checking that the pizza base and crusts are crispy but not blackened and burnt underneath. The toppings should be well-cooked but not burnt and the cheese should be completely melted.

How easy is the pizza oven to use?

We time how quickly the pizza oven heats up to cooking temperature and look how easy it is to use the fuel and maintain a consistent heat.

We check whether the outside of the oven is too hot to touch as this can cause burns in use.

How easy is the pizza oven to move and store?

For portable pizza ovens, we check how easy it is to fold the legs and dismantle any chimney they may have.

We check how heavy or awkward they are to carry and whether they come with a carry bag.
