Steam cleaners

Steam cleaners work by heating up water to produce steam. High pressure then creates ‘dry steam’, which is pushed onto the surface being cleaned. Manufactures say steam cleaners clean dirt and grease and kill bacteria and dust mites.

There are three types of steam cleaners: cylinder, handheld and mops.

  • Cylinder steam cleaners look similar to a vacuum cleaner, with a main body, bendy hose and nozzle.
  • Handheld steam cleaners are compact and can be a good option for cleaning small, hard-to-reach areas.
  • Steam mops, such as the Home-tek Light ‘n’ Easy HT838, are upright with a water tank attached at the handle. Many can clean wood, vinyl and carpet.

How to buy a steam cleaner

Although there are the three types of steam cleaners, many have accessories that allow each cleaner to do more than one task. Before buying, consider the jobs you’d like to do, such as steaming curtains or cleaning carpet, and then compare each model’s capabilities to find the most suitable.

Think about the capacity of the machine and how long it takes to heat up. Some machines need refilling regularly – especially handheld models, as they can’t hold a lot of water. If you have to keep topping up the water often, look for a model that heats up quickly.
