Three Best Buy carpet cleaners for 2014 revealed

Buy or rent? We put the Rug Doctor to the test

Rug Doctor carpet cleaner

We’ve reviewed and rated the Rug Doctor, which you can buy for £430, or rent for £33

Our latest carpet cleaner group test has uncovered three Best Buy models that are so good, they’ll make your grubby carpets look like new again.

We put 16 carpet cleaners from big names such as Bissell, Vax, Rug Doctor and Hoover head to head on grubby and stained carpets in the Which? lab. We also tested out the Rug Doctor – a carpet cleaner that is available to rent widely on the high street.

But while we found three models that do an excellent job cheering up tired carpets, a further four proved so ineffective on dirty carpets that we’ve labelled them Don’t Buys and recommend you avoid them.

You can find out which models were the winners and losers in our carpet cleaner reviews section.

Rug Doctor: buy or rent?

The average price of the carpet cleaners we’ve tested is £200. However, among those carpet cleaners is the Rug Doctor, which you can buy for £430, or rent for approximately £33.

That price secures you a Rug Doctor for 24 hours and gets you a litre of carpet cleaning detergent, which is advised as being enough for two rooms. The Rug Doctor is available to rent from a number of stores across the UK such as Asda, Homebase, B&Q, Morrisons, Johnson Cleaners, Tesco, the Co-operative and the Range.

Which? floor care expert Adrian Porter said: ‘Our research shows that carpet cleaners are not the most frequently used of machines. Some that own them only use it once or twice a year, if that.

‘The Rug Doctor has gone through exactly the same tests as the carpet cleaners you can buy in the shops. We’ve given our expert view on whether it’s worth buying or renting, but you’ll also be able to compare our test results for yourself.’
