The best freestanding cooker brands for 2020

Find out how we rate the biggest cooker brands, from AEG and Belling to Hotpoint and Zanussi

The best freestanding cooker brands for 2020

Ready for a new cooker after Christmas? You might be tempted to pick one up in the January sales. But we’ve found that, while cookers from the most reliable brand are likely to last at least eight years fault-free, some brands aren’t so dependable.

We’ve asked people who own freestanding cookers to let us know how reliable they’ve been over time, so that you can make sure you pick the best brands to buy from. 80% of cookers from the most reliable brand remain fault-free for at least eight years

At the other end of the scale, only 57% of cookers from the least reliable brand make it to three years trouble-free. Buy from one of these brands, and you could soon end up needing to make costly repairs.

In our unique reliability survey (October 2019) we asked 7,916 Which? members to tell us about their experiences with their appliances. We asked more than 900 people about their freestanding cookers, to find the brands that last the longest, as well as those with the happiest customers.

Picking a long-lasting model is important, but if your cooker didn’t pass muster over Christmas then head straight to our Best Buy freestanding cooker reviews.

Reliable freestanding cooker brands

The respondents in our survey have rated the biggest cooker brands, including AEG, Belling, Hotpoint and Zanussi.

The most reliable brand in our survey won’t let you down – nearly 80% of freestanding cookers from this company stayed fault-free for at least eight years.

Plus, four of the freestanding cookers we’ve tested from it in the past three years are Best Buys.

Customers told us that just 57% of cookers from the least reliable brand were fault-free after three years. After eight years, this dropped to 53%.

Which freestanding cooker brands do customers like?

We give each brand a customer score, which relates to whether those surveyed would recommend it.

Two brands got a customer score of 77%. Both scored well for reliability, and one of the brands has an average Which? test score of 64% – the highest of any brand.

The lowest-scoring brand for customer satisfaction is also one of the least reliable, so probably best to avoid it.

Common freestanding cooker faults

The most common problems people experience with their freestanding cooker are the door seal failing or the oven door not closing properly. Both will affect how well the oven retains heat, which could spell disaster for anything you’re cooking inside.

Not far behind, affecting 8.9% of owners, is the oven light not working. This means you’ll struggle to see what’s going on during cooking.

The good news is that none of these problems are not particularly serious and can usually be fixed yourself with the right replacement parts and a read of the appliance instructions.

Which built-in oven brand is best?

If you’re looking for a built-in oven rather than a freestanding cooker, then we’ve got you covered too. Find out which built-in oven brand to buy in 2020.
