Best freezer for garages for 2025

If you plan to put your freezer in an unheated room such as a garage, it's safer to choose a model that's specially designed for this purpose.

Very few freezers have a manufacturer's guarantee for use in temperatures as low as -15°C. Currently, only a couple we've tested are really impressive.

We'll update this page with more garage-suitable models as we find them. At present, these are your best options.

Note: We only test freezers in room conditions of 10°C and above, so our test results won't indicate how these freezers fare in the extremely cold environments manufacturers guarantee them for.

Why you can trust our freezer reviews

Which? is a not-for-profit organisation – but to keep our reviews bias-free and independent, we purchase every freezer we test ourselves, just like a regular shopper. We don't accept freebies.

Each freezer we buy undergoes a series of rigorous lab tests designed by our experts to mirror the way you use your freezer in real life.

We focus on an appliance's performance, not marketing hype or manufacturer claims, which are often based on tests conducted in idealised conditions.

Not many freezers are designed for the colder temperatures of garages or outhouses. Those that are, don't usually reach the same high standards as other freezers – so you'll have to lower your expectations if you really want a garage freezer. There are only a few we'd recommend.

Where to buy a freezer

  • Amazon has over 2,000 results for freezers, from brands including Haier, Hisense and Russell Hobbs, with some models stating that they're 'suitable for outbuildings'.
  • AO stocks more than 120 upright, under-counter and chest freezers online. AO members can access discounted prices, although non-members still have a wide range of prices to choose from. Monthly instalment plans are available, and you can pay extra for unpacking, door reversal and recycling.
  • Boots Kitchen Appliances says 'We deliver, install and we'll even take your old one away to recycle'. It stocks over 100 freezers from the likes of Beko, Bosch and Hisense.
  • Currys sells a huge range of freezers, and you can filter by models 'suitable for outbuildings'. At the time of writing, there are almost 50 models listed under this filter. You can add installation, door reversal and recycling of your old appliance for an additional fee.
  • John Lewis has 33 freezers stocked online, including a small selection of own-brand products. Prices start from around £240 and go up to around £1,350.

Are any freezers or chest freezers designed especially for garages?

Some brands, such as Beko, Liebherr and Logik, claim that some of their freezers are suitable for use in temperatures as low as -15°C.

It's best to check for the specific model you’re considering, though, as not all freezers from these brands are guaranteed for use in temperatures lower than 10°C.

See our guide to the best fridge freezers if you'd rather have freezer and a fridge all in one.

Can I keep any freezer or chest freezer in the garage?

Freezers are designed to be kept inside your home, rather than in an unheated garage. In fact, most freezers are designed to be used only in temperatures no lower than 10°C.

This means that very few freezers are actually suitable for garages. In practice, lots of people do keep freezers in their garages for years. If you don't have room for a freezer in your kitchen, you may have already done this without worrying about it much.

Not all freezer manufacturers guarantee that their appliances will work as normal in rooms with low temperatures, though. If you place a non-guaranteed model in an outbuilding – where the temperature is likely to drop below 10°C – and it develops a fault, the warranty will have been invalidated, and you won't be covered.

You'll have to choose carefully if you want peace of mind that a freezer in a garage is covered against a fault.

What does freezer climate class mean?

Every fridge, freezer and fridge freezer has a climate class. These are set by an international standard and range from 10°C to 43°C to cover hotter and colder countries.

Here’s the full list of climate classes and the temperatures they cover:

  • 10-32°C: SN
  • 16-32°C: N
  • 16-38°C: ST
  • 16-43°C: T

Most UK freezers have a climate class of SN and will work in rooms that range from 10°C to 32°C. You can find out the climate class of your freezer by checking the rating plate inside the appliance or in the instruction manual.

Some appliances can cover multiple climate classes, so you may see an appliance with a climate class of SN-T, which means it's designed to work in temperatures ranging from 10°C to 43°C.

You can use the climate class filter on our freezer reviews to find a freezer for a specific climate class.
