Outfox Energy

Launched towards the end of 2017, Outfox Energy (formerly Outfox the Market and renamed in June 2025) is a family-owned company based in Leicester in the East Midlands. The brand describes itself as 'one of the cheapest' energy suppliers on the market.
The company claims to 'pride [itself] on being able to offer that authentic touch to [its] service that many larger companies can no longer do' – so we've put that promise to the test and asked its customers what they think.
Outfox Energy customers can use its app to submit meter readings, check their balance or make payments. The company prefers customers to manage their accounts online, but those who don't have the internet or can't manage their account online or via the app can use paper billing.

Our Outfox Energy supplier assessment
In September-November 2025 we looked at five aspects of suppliers' business practices and procedures. Examples of some criteria within each category include:
- Complaints – how many complaints suppliers get and how quickly they resolve them
- Contacting your supplier – including how and when you can get in touch, call waiting times, and the quality of self-service help online
- Help for customers who need it – including those in vulnerable situations, those who use prepayment meters, those who need materials in languages besides English, and web accessibility
- Smart meters – including performance against 2024 smart meter targets and the proportion of customers' smart meters actually operating in smart mode
- Switching – how well suppliers handle switching.
We did this using a combination of the responses to a survey we sent to suppliers and our own assessments.
Outfox Energy scored 68% in our assessment, putting it joint-second along with Utilita. The highest score was 79%, earned by E (Gas & Electricity). The brand also achieved decent scores for handling complaints (11 points out of 15) and providing help to those in need (7 points out of 10).
It wasn't among the best for switching, with an underwhelming two out of five points compared with the five achieved by E (Gas & Electricity).
Does Outfox Energy support prepayment meters?
No, Outfox Energy does not currently supply energy through prepayment meters. It says: 'We are working on an offering for existing customers that are struggling to manage their energy spend, and this will be extended to new customers in due course.'
If you currently have a prepayment meter and want to switch to a credit meter with Outfox Energy, contact your current supplier to ask them to exchange your meter for a credit meter. Once this has been completed, you will be free to move.

How sustainable is Outfox Energy?
Sustainability credentials are important when choosing an energy supplier for two thirds of those responsible for choosing their provider. That's according to our online survey of 3,000 UK adults in August 2024.
So we factor in a range of sustainability criteria in our Eco Provider assessment. We are next running this research in 2026.
Here's how Outfox Energy fared:
- Proportion of renewable electricity sold to customers: 41%
- Doesn't generate renewable electricity
- Doesn't offer time-of-use tariffs
