Three holidaymakers trekking through the mountains and admiring the view on their adventure/ activity holiday

Only the finest holiday providers will fully take the stress out of planning a detailed itinerary, especially for adventures that push you outside your comfort zone. So when we asked holidaymakers to rate their most recent activity and adventure trips - from treks and bike tours to kayaking and golf - just five were named Which? Recommended Providers (WRPs).

UK company Exodus Adventure Travels topped our rankings and has more than 500 trips to choose from for your next adventure. Alhough most of its tours are ready-made, its experiences are anything but typical, with five stars for its customer service, organisation and accommodation.

While our WRPs scored similarly, they offer quite different experiences. Our list is made up of walking and cycling specialists, a high-end travel agent for activities in the lap of luxury, and one that can tailor-make any excursion worldwide.

All our WRPs offer package deals, but some give you the option to book your own extras elsewhere. However, bear in mind that booking a package holiday means you are covered by the Package Travel Regulations for financial protection if anything goes wrong.

Which adventure/ activity holiday providers does Which? recommend?

Exodus Adventure Travels, Which? Recommended Provider

Verdict: The highest scorer in the Which? adventure/ activity holiday survey

Customer score: 92%

Pros

  • Scored the full five stars in all but one category
  • The holidays lived up to expectations
  • Impeccable customer service
  • Helpful guides

Cons

  • Nothing major

Exodus Adventure Travels is a UK company founded in 1974 that offers active holidays worldwide. Its itineraries cater to different fitness levels and you can book trips with or without a guide. Specialising in walking and cycling trips, it also offers mixed-activity holidays and more unique adventures, such as journeys to the Arctic.

Like all the best companies, Exodus excels at delivering consistently great holidays, something that helped it secure the highest customer score in our survey.

It was clear in our research that lots of people were impressed by the competence and friendliness of the guides Exodus provided, as well as the detailed activity plans. One customer who returns again and again to Exodus for small group tours explained why: 'They are well organised, groups are small, they try to find accommodation which is often a little bit different, and they use local guides for the whole trip.' Another told us: 'At all times we felt safe and looked after'. They delivered for solo travellers too - one such holidaymaker felt well-catered for, telling us that Exodus 'integrated [them] very well'.

It’s not just the trip itself that customers were impressed by - the booking process sounds smooth too. For instance, because you can read detailed itineraries of Exodus's trips online, customers knew exactly what they were booking. One client described Exodus as having 'the best customer service', and another was relieved of the stress of planning everything themselves. And while customising a holiday can be expensive, one holidaymaker said that when Exodus did this, it was 'great value for money'.

Kuoni, Which? Recommended Provider

Verdict: A great choice to combine luxury locations with fun, multi-activity holidays

Customer score: 90%

Pros

  • Scored a five-star rating in nearly all categories surveyed
  • Provides luxury experiences
  • Has exceptional customer care
  • Makes planning straightforward

Cons

  • Doesn't offer the extent of adventures of some other WRPs

Kuoni is best known for relaxing, luxury holidays rather than physically challenging expeditions. However, it can tailor-make multi-activity holidays, and customers told us they had brilliant adventures, so much so that we awarded it a Which? Recommended Provider badge in this category.

Kuoni delivers a personal service and staff can add on as many activities and excursions to your holiday as you want, such as trekking, water sports or diving - no wonder its agents were described as ‘incredibly helpful’. No matter the accommodation or activities each customer booked, they told us that they got a high-end experience where everything was as expected. As one explained: 'Kuoni made everything effortless. The itinerary was perfectly planned, and the local guide was very knowledgeable. Every detail was handled smoothly, from the airport pickup to the private excursions. It really felt like a proper five-star experience without any stress.'

Even though Kuoni’s trips can be expensive, it scored four stars for value for money, suggesting that customers felt it was money well spent.

HF Holidays, Which? Recommended Provider

Verdict: A detail-oriented walking holiday specialist you can rely on

Customer score: 89%

Pros

  • Provides 'meticulously organised' walking holidays
  • Lots of walking holidays to choose from in beautiful locations
  • Welcoming staff and friendly atmosphere
  • Manages UK accommodation in-house

Cons

  • Doesn't offer many activities beyond walking

HF Holidays is Britain's only walking co-operative. This means it is owned by its members and any financial surpluses are reinvested back into the business to improve its holidays. It specialises in guided and self-guided walking holidays in the UK and in almost 40 other countries. It aims to connect like-minded people and caters to everyone from casual walkers to keen long-distance hikers. In the UK, you'll stay in one of the country houses HF manages, while abroad, you're offered a selection of independent hotels.

The HF Holiday Leaders who guide most of the walking holidays are all volunteers, sharing their passion for the outdoors with holidaymakers. Customers felt that the itineraries and activities HF provided were clear, detailed and 'well-thought-through'. Crucially, holiday-goers found that the difficulty and length of the walks were described accurately. One said: 'They know how to run walking holidays. Every day one usually has a choice of three walks of different lengths / heights, or going alone on a different walk, or doing nothing so energetic!' All your meals and accommodation are provided, and walkers were impressed with the generous amounts of food at mealtimes and the other conveniences in their accommodation. These are all things you should experience at any of its locations, with one customer explaining that HF's standards are uniformly high.

One holidaymaker we talked to has been on more than 20 self-guided walking holidays with HF, and enjoyed every single one. The solo travellers we spoke to were very satisfied too and enjoyed the 'congeniality of the group'. Another told us that they were impressed with the reasonable rate of the single rooms, which is something we don't always see.

Trailfinders, Which? Recommended Provider

Verdict: A dependable company that offers a myriad of exciting adventure / activity holidays

Customer score: 85%

Pros

  • Detailed knowledge of the huge variety of adventure / activity trips it offers
  • Customers found it 'reliable and trustworthy'
  • Excellent attention to detail in itineraries

Cons

  • If you want to pre-book a consultation in person on an online video call, Trailfinders charges £50 for pre-meeting prep that can be redeemed against a booking

Trailfinders' strength lies in building custom itineraries, which often involve adventures and activities. From challenging treks and mountain biking to kayaking and climbing, the possibilities for your next expedition feel endless. It can organise everything for you, including flights, accommodation, tours and guides.

When enquiring, Trailfinders can put you in touch with a location specialist, and one impressed customer told us that the 'depth of knowledge and personalised service from [their] travel consultant was outstanding'. Others said staff made planning easy and that someone was always available to help with follow-up queries. ‘Nothing was too much trouble,’ as one put it. And one traveller said that when they ran into minor issues, Trailfinders exceeded their expectations by ensuring they didn't have to deal with extra costs or delays.

Customers told us that they enjoyed the activities and locations on their Trailfinders trip, alongside accommodation that met all their needs. One experienced holidaymaker who usually organises their itinerary themselves went to Trailfinders for help with a special, long-distance trip. They told us they 'would not hesitate to use them again' and they appreciated how their Trailfinders travel agent went so far as to contact them while they were away to make sure they were happy with everything.

Inntravel, Which? Recommended Provider

Verdict: Provides tremendous walking and cycling holidays

Customer score: 85%

Pros

  • Has high-quality accommodation
  • Builds custom itineraries
  • Thorough in its plans for holidaymakers

Cons

  • Scored three stars for value for money

Founded in the UK in 1984, Inntravel is a walking and cycling specialist for holidays in the UK and across Europe (although it also offers winter and mountain getaways to experience activities such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing). Its holidays are designed to flex to your needs. You set the pace without a guide while your luggage is moved between its recommended hotels.

Customers told us that everything ran smoothly on their Inntravel holidays. One said they experienced 'no negatives' on their most recent trip and explained that Inntravel has 'proven to be very reliable over several years.' One solo traveller told us they were very pleased with the low price of the single supplement.

One person who booked a self-guided walking holiday said they were provided with a 'good choice of routes with clear descriptions', plus 'lovely accommodation'. Inntravel's routes are well-thought-out, and one customer highlighted that the detail was 'so precise you couldn't put a foot wrong.' It's also clear that visitors' positive experiences didn't stop at the end of their hikes, with one telling us: 'It's the ideal package for people that like walking, but like to relax and finish the day in comfort.'

However, it scored lower than other WRPs on value for money (three stars). One customer told us they felt that the cost of add-ons, such as transfers, was expensive, so much so that they organised their own.
