Hotel comparison sites compared

We test six websites, from Google Hotels and Kayak to Trivago and Skyscanner, to find which ones locate the best prices for accommodation

With the cost of staying in a hotel in England now averaging at £159 per night, according to Visit Britain, it’s vital to make sure you get the best deal.

The top hotel comparison sites can help you find low prices by comparing fares and room rates across dozens of booking sites.

Google Hotels regularly found the cheapest hotel prices in our research, in part because it was the only site during our checks that always let you book directly with the hotel, which is often cheaper.

This was the sort of thing our in-house experts looked for when assessing hotel comparison sites, as well as checking which site found the cheapest prices across 30 hotel stays. We also asked members of the public to complete tasks on each site to see how easy it was to navigate and whether the advertised price increased when they clicked through to buy.

Below, we reveal which sites to use when you next book a hotel stay, as well as one site that didn’t impress.

Table notes: Star ratings combine user testing results (using five participants), pricing analysis and expert assessment, carried out Oct 2025. Total score = combines weighted star ratings with how likely user testers are to use the site in future. Site functionality = usefulness, ease of use, sorting/filtering options. Booking options = number of results returned and if it offers hotel direct booking options. Cheap rates = how often a site could return the median price or below vs competitors (we checked 30 hotel prices). Transparency and accuracy = if prices match reality after clicking through, plus transparency and prominence of sponsored listings/ads. WRPs: score highly and meet strict criteria.

What is Google Hotels like as a hotel price comparison site?

Total score: 79%

Person using Google Hotels price comparison tool

The world’s biggest search engine found the cheapest hotel rates most often, probably thanks to the unrivalled number of booking sites it returned in our searches. That said the price advertised didn’t always match what was shown when users went to book, and the three-star transparency rating meant we couldn’t make it a Which? Recommended Provider. It does have some other excellent features, such as notifying you when prices dip in the area you plan to book in.

Verdict: Excellent on price and has some unique and helpful features.

What is Skyscanner like as a hotel price comparison site?

Total score: 65%

It might be better known as a flight comparison site, but Skyscanner doesn’t do a bad job of aggregating hotel prices. It came second to Google, performing well in our pricing analysis and impressing our user testers with helpful filters and easy ways to sort results. Plus, all user testers told us they were likely or extremely likely to use the site to search for hotels in future, a ringing endorsement. We were less impressed that it gives some booking websites more prominence over others, even when they’re more expensive. And it doesn't always include resort fees (typical in the US) in the final price shown.

Verdict: It’s worth a check alongside Google Hotels.

Compare accommodation on Skyscanner

What is Cozycozy like as a hotel price comparison site?

Total score: 54%

The fact that Cozycozy has fewer booking options than all the other sites we assessed meant that, in our view, it simply can’t compete with the likes of Google, TripAdvisor and Skyscanner. It also rarely offered the option to book directly with hotels, and it literally took days of using it for our experts to work out how to see all available booking site options. It was poor on features, too. Users also couldn’t even filter by location in one of the tasks we set, and it was unable to indicate whether prices were a good deal or not.

Verdict: Don’t bother.

Using hotel comparison sites

People standing in hotel room

While an excellent tool for finding a hotel to your tastes and budget, as well as comparing prices, remember that comparison sites don’t necessarily vet the quality of the websites they suggest you book with. Nor do they always show you the price of booking with the hotel direct - something we’ve found is often cheaper. Use them to narrow down your search and then check the cost of booking directly. If you’re willing to pick up the phone, the hotel might even reduce the price further. Even when they won’t, hotels often throw in a freebie such as breakfast.
