Who is Co-op insurance? 

    Co-op Insurance was first formed in 1867 to provide fire insurance for co-operative societies.

    It's evolved a lot since then and now offers a whole host of insurance products such as home insurance, travel insurance, pet insurance as well as car insurance and breakdown cover.

    Co-op Insurance is owned by the Co-op Group, which is one of the largest consumer co-operatives in the world.

    Co-op's home insurance policy: is it good or bad?

    In February 2019, we analysed and rated 60 of the most important elements of standard home insurance policies to come up with the overall policy score.

    We assess how important each individual element is when choosing and using a home insurance policy, and weight it accordingly when calculating our total policy score. Each element is given a star rating, out of five.

    Overall, 47 out of the 60 elements policy elements we analysed in Co-op's home insurance earned a 3-star rating or higher.

    While 22 of Co-op's policy elements were given a full 5-star rating, 23 of the features in its policy were given a 3-star rating, which indicates an average level of cover.

    We’ve identified three standout features in Co-op’s home insurance policy:

    • Legal expenses covered at standard, which got a full 5-star rating
    • Up 25% discount if you buy buildings and contents insurance together, which we scored 5 stars
    • Business and office equipment covered as standard, which earned 5 stars

    Worst parts of Co-op's home insurance policy

    We've identified three features in AA's home insurance policy which scored poorly:

    • Theft of keys not covered as standard under buildings insurance, which scored 0 stars
    • Only £500 for contents left in the open, which we gave 1 star
    • A £250 cover limit for home emergency, which earned 2 stars

    How did customers rate Co-op's home insurance?

    As well as looking at how Co-op's home insurance policy stacks up against others, we've also analysed how customers feel about it too.

    Which?'s rating for customer satisfaction is based on feedback from real customers. The score is made up of a customer's overall satisfaction with the brand, and how likely they are to recommend that brand.

    Overall, Co-op home insurance scored 70% for customer satisfaction, placing it 16th out of the 34 home insurers we looked at.

    Customers scored Co-op's 'ease of managing your policy online' and 'value for money' the highest, giving them both four stars out of five. The Co-op's 'clarity of policy' was among the lowest-scoring features and only received three stars.

    Does Co-op insurance offer different levels of home insurance cover?

    The scores shown in this review relate to Co-op's standard home insurance policy. It is possible to increase your level of cover by adding optional extras to your policy, for example, home emergency cover. 

    Choosing to add more features on to your policy will come at an added cost, making your policy more expensive than a standard one.

    If you need to make a claim with Co-op home insurance call 0345 999 8888 or submit a claims form online. 

    The acid test of any home insurance provider is how it handles your claim. In January 2019, Which? surveyed 1,456 members of the general public about their experiences using a major home insurance provider.

    Co-op scored 74%, placing it 10th out of 21 home insurers. It scored four stars for customer service and its speed of dealing with a claim. It only earned three stars for its 'regular communication on claim progress.'
