Aldi is selling a £20 kettle and toaster: are they worth buying?

Aldi is selling a cheap kettle and toaster set as part of its January kitchen deals round-up.

The Ambiano Digital kettle (£20) and Ambiano Long Slot toaster (£20) make up a smart matching pair that will set you back just under £40, and they have extra features you don't always find at this price point too.

They're available in black, grey or cream with chrome accents, and you can buy them online or in store while stocks last.

Aldi kettle and toaster: what you get

Aldi Ambiano Digital kettle, £20

• 1.5-litre capacity (6 cups)
• Digital variable temperature controls
• Keep warm function
• 0.5-litre minimum fill
• Illuminated water window

This kettle punches above its weight with the digital controls and extra temperature settings, meaning you can heat water to under 100u2070C so you don't ruin delicate drinks.

A keep warm function will hold that temperature for you for another half hour too. Both are handy added extras that you'll rarely find on a kettle this cheap.

The large water window should make it easy to see how full the kettle is from afar, though it's worth bearing in mind this kettle has a slightly smaller capacity than most rivals, which typically hold around 1.7 litres.

The minimum fill level is also quite high, so you have to boil half a litre of water each time. Some kettles will let you quickly boil just one cup's worth to save energy.

Aldi Ambiano Long Slot Toaster, £20

The long slots on this toaster make it a savvy choice if you like to toast homemade or artisan-style breads.

Our tests show that this type of toaster tends to be more versatile and do a better job of fitting taller slices than regular sized toasters, as you can use the whole length of a double slot for awkward-shaped loaves.

The Ambiano toaster's high-lift function will also please crumpet lovers, as it helps to push smaller items up above the toasting carriage so you don't singe your fingers when trying to retrieve them.

Should you buy the Aldi kettle and toaster?

While we haven't fully lab tested these models, they do offer some handy features for the price point, so it comes down to whether you're willing to take a gamble on how effectively and quickly they boil and toast.

The three-year manufacturer guarantee on both is generous for this type of appliance: one or two years is standard. Our survey data shows that if a kettle or toaster develops a fault it's most likely to occur in the first three years, so if you do take the plunge make sure you hang onto your receipt in case you need to get it repaired or replaced.
