Best electric blankets and heated throws 2025

We've tested heated throws and electric blankets from Dreamland, Lakeland, Silentnight and more to find out which ones will keep you warm this winter
Jonny MartinResearcher & writer

We've tested heated throws and electric blankets ranging in price from around £25 to £115, so we can bring you the best for warmth and value this winter.

We use precise temperature measurements taken with a thermocouple to help you steer clear of the models that barely heat up after 20 minutes, and point you towards those that will be nice and toasty just as the kettle boils.

It's also worth knowing that claimed running costs for electric blankets and heated throws are usually based on the blanket's lowest power setting. Our repeated testing over the years has found that this setting hardly heats the blankets up at all. That's why our reviews give you the running costs measured from each blanket and throw's highest setting.

Why you can trust us to reveal the very best electric blankets and heated throws: Which? is a not for profit organisation and has been testing products and calling out rogue businesses for almost 70 years.

In an increasingly chaotic world, filled with so-called 'experts', it's good to know that brands still can't buy their way onto our testing or influence what we write. We buy every product we test and we'll tell you the worst as well as the best heated throws and electric blankets.

How we test electric blankets and heated throws

Electric blanket testing

To test electric blankets and heated throws, we've designed a test that captures how quickly and evenly each blanket heats up. We also factor in how comfortable each blanket is, according to a panel of volunteers.

We regularly revisit the electric blankets and heated throws on sale to see if there are any more popular models that need testing, and when we find them, we do so.

Heating speed and evenness

  • Heat-up time We attach temperature sensors to six different locations on each electric blanket or heated throw and record how quickly each blanket heats up over a five-minute and 20-minute period on their highest setting. The best blankets heat up twice as fast as the worst. We've also seen some that heat up quickly initially, only for the increase in heat to rapidly taper off.
  • Heat distribution Using the six temperature sensors, we record how evenly each blanket heats up. There are big differences here: most heat fairly evenly, but there are a fair few with irregular hot and cold spots.
  • Responsiveness Once the electric blanket or heated throw has reached its maximum temperature, we lower the temperature setting and record how responsive each blanket is.

We've tested a lot of blankets on their lowest settings over the years, and we've found that by and large, these are incredibly ineffective. You'll only see real differences in performance at the highest settings, which is what we use in all our heating speed and evenness tests.

Woman sleeping under electric blanket

Comfort and ease of use

  • Comfort A panel of five volunteers assesses each electric blanket and heated throw for comfort. There's quite a big difference in how snuggly each one is, and underwires are more noticeable in some of them. For electric blankets, we also assess how comfortable each one is to lie on under a fitted sheet.
  • Ease of use For electric blankets, we assess how straightforward they are to attach to a thick double mattress.
  • Power cord length We've seen that manufacturers often don't list the length of the power cords for electric blankets and throws, so we record these figures and tell you how they compare with the average.

Energy use and safety

  • Energy use We attach each electric blanket and heated throw to an energy monitor and record how much energy it uses when running on its highest setting. Prices range from 2p to 7p an hour. While some manufacturers and other online reviews list the cost for the lowest settings, our testing found that this results in such low temperature increases that we don't think it's a realistic setting for keeping warm.
  • We used the RS PRO energy meter, £28, from RS Components. If you're interested in measuring your electric blanket, throw or other appliances around your home, you can buy similar meters starting from around £18 from popular retailers such as Amazon and Screwfix.
  • Safety After testing, each electric blanket and heated throw has a full electrical safety test conducted on it.

How much does it cost to run an electric blanket?

Manufacturers like to claim in their adverts that heated throws and electric blankets are cheap to run – but we've gathered the data necessary to find out if that's true or not.

On their highest settings, we found that electric blankets cost anywhere between 2p and 6p an hour to run. All the heated throws we've tested cost either 2p or 3p an hour to run.

Electric blankets in general don't use a lot of electricity, but there are still significant differences between certain models. If you have an electric blanket on every night for three hours, for six months of the year, the most expensive to run would cost you £33.21 in energy, while the cheapest costs £10.21 – a saving of £23.

Switching on an electric blanket

Are heated throws and electric blankets safe?

If you buy your blanket from a reputable UK retailer, as we did for our tests, then it should be safe.

But take extra care if you buy from an online marketplace, as in the past we've found some stocking potentially unsafe electric blankets that can't be sold legally in the UK.

As part of our test, we conduct a full electricity safety test on each blanket. To date, every single one we've reviewed has passed.

Any risk posed by electric blankets tends to come from disreputable online sellers, or old blankets that have become worn and unsafe. If you have an old electric blanket that's showing signs of wear or has visible wires, it could be time for a change.

Is it OK to sleep with an electric blanket? The London Fire Brigade emphasises that electric blankets can be a safe and cost-effective way to stay warm, provided they're used correctly.

It's recommended to inspect blankets regularly for signs of wear, such as frayed fabric, exposed wires or overheating connectors, and to unplug them before bed unless they have a thermostat for safe overnight use.

What should I look for in an electric blanket?

  • How comfy is it and can you feel any wires?
  • What are the running costs?
  • How long is the cord to ensure you can plug it in without needing an extension lead?
  • What's the heat-up time?
  • How good is the heat distribution?
  • What size is it and will it fit my bed?

We record all these key things to look for in an electric blanket in our reviews, above.

What is better than an electric blanket?

If you want to keep warm in bed without shelling out for an electric blanket, a cheaper option is a hot water bottle.

The good news is that you don't need to splash out on a pricey one – our testing discovered that paying more doesn't mean you'll stay warmer. Instead, you'll want to invest in a thicker cover, as this is the biggest factor in ensuring your bottle retains heat for longer.

See how the running costs of an electric blanket compare with the cost of boiling your kettle for a hot water bottle in our guide: Hot water bottle or electric blanket, what's best and cheapest for keeping you warm in bed.
