What do customers think about Nationwide?

I have been a customer of Nationwide for a long time and I'm happy with its financial products. And in recent years, its Fair Sharer scheme makes me feel like I am getting something back for my loyalty.

Nationwide mortgage customer

Alongside our customer scores and star ratings, we also collected comments from Nationwide mortgage customers.

Unsurprisingly, most feedback was positive. Customers praised Nationwide's customer service, with one respondent telling us that 'staff are always willing to go the extra mile'.

Flexibility was another common theme, particularly the ability to make overpayments. Some customers told us they had used this feature to substantially reduce their mortgage balance.

The app and website also received positive feedback, particularly for checking balances, accessing statements and monitoring overpayments. However, Nationwide's branch network remains important to some customers. Several valued having face-to-face access, while others were disappointed by the lack of a nearby branch or mortgage adviser.

Some customers also praised the Fairer Share Payment, a scheme that paid qualifying customers £100 in 2026.

Nationwide mortgage lender FAQs

What types of mortgage does Nationwide offer?

When we checked in September 2026, there were 406 mortgages available from Nationwide. Most were fixed-rate deals, meaning your interest rate stays the same for a set initial period.

Nationwide mortgages had initial periods of two, three, five or 10 years.

A smaller number of mortgages offered by Nationwide were tracker deals, with initial terms lasting two years before reverting to Nationwide's standard variable rate.

How much could I borrow from Nationwide?

Nationwide doesn't publish its borrowing caps for standard mortgages, but you can use its affordability calculator to check the size of a mortgage you qualify for.

For its Helping Hand mortgage, designed to help first-time buyers, you can borrow up to six times your income.

Does Nationwide offer green mortgages?

Nationwide doesn't offer preferential rates for mortgages on homes with excellent energy ratings.

Instead, it rewards buyers for purchasing green homes. If the property has an EPC score between 86 and 91, you will get £250 cashback. If the score is 92 or higher, you'll receive £500 cashback.

In addition, if you're an existing mortgage customer, you can apply for a 0% interest Green Additional Borrowing mortgage. The scheme enables you to borrow between £5,000 and £20,000 to fund improvements such as installing solar panels, adding cavity wall insulation or installing double-glazing. Be aware that the 0% interest applies only to the length of your fixed-term mortgage.

How long can the mortgage term be?

All of Nationwide's mortgages allow a maximum term length of 40 years.
