Typically on sale for £599, a double mattress is currently available for £539 at EZE.
We like: It's easy to turn over on
We don't like: The cover isn't removable for washing
EZE describes this mattress as a hybrid, but the large pocket spring core means we class it as pocket sprung, despite the foam layers.
The foam layers won't suck you in, and it's breathable, so if you do tend to sweat or have hot flushes, the cover does a good job of wicking away moisture.
Bought direct from EZE, it's delivered vacuum-packed in a box. Delivery is free, but there's no trial-night offer. You can, however, return it within 14 days of buying as part of the Consumer Contracts Regulations – just keep the original box.
It comes with a 10-year warranty.

Typically on sale for £250, a double mattress is currently available for £199 at Dormeo.
We like: Good for people who like a medium tension mattress
We don't like: You might feel some movement from bedfellows
This is one of two Octasmart Essentials mattresses by Dormeo, which vary in terms of the softness of the cushioning they provide. The Aerocell version is designed for people who prefer a slightly firmer surface than memory foam.
Weighing just 14.3kg and only 17cm thick, it is the kind of lightweight and portable mattress that will provide a comfortable place for impromptu overnight guests to crash.

We like: It's light and easy to rotate to even out wear and tear
We don't like: It's a bit bouncy
The SleepSoul Heaven is a pocket sprung mattress covered with multiple layers of foam, including a pillow top, and layers of ‘coolgel’ foam. These are designed to help provide a supportive, cool, comfy and breathable surface to lie on.
It’s a boxed mattress, which arrives rolled up, making it much easier to get to the room of your choice. It's been on sale for quite a while, so you'd have to assume it must have been getting something right, or is it just the keen price that keeps customers coming back for more?

We like: Despite the foam, turning over is easy
We don't like: The cover is not removable
The SleepSoul Bliss is available online from several retailers, and depending on where you buy it you can take advantage of a 60-night trial to ensure that it suits you.
It consists of a deep 25cm core of pocket springs covered by generous layers of foam and memory foam. Some memory foam-containing mattresses can be a bit warm, but this one has a cool surface for sleeping on.

We like: It's easy to move around on
We don't like: It's a bit bouncy
The Mattress Online Horizon Odyssey 800 promises a ‘journey into comfort’. It's a hybrid mattress that combines a 14.5cm pocket spring core with two layers of foam (3cm above the pocket springs and 4cm below). Towards the surface that you sleep on, there’s a further 2cm section of memory foam.
It’s marketed as a medium mattress, but our independent tests rated it as 7.2 on a scale from 1 (very firm) to 10 (very soft), even though it may feel firm to touch.
But will this mattress stand the test of time, and will your sleep be out of this world?
Our Horizon Odyssey 800 Pocket Memory Mattress review reveals all.

We like: It's not too bouncy
We don't like: The cover isn't removable for washing
This isn't the cheapest price we've seen for the Jay-Be 2000 Hybrid mattress, but it's still a good deal.
The term ‘hybrid’ in this mattress's name is slightly confusing. Hybrid mattresses are usually a mix of pocket springs and foam layers, but there's no foam in this mattress. This is to conform to Jay-Be’s eco claims. Instead, it's made from pocket springs and layers of polyester: an 18.5cm pocket spring core, with a 2.5cm mini pocket spring core on top and several layers of polyester webbing.
Will the lack of foam mean it's less supportive?

Cheapest price in the past six months: £329*

We like: 100-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty included
We don't like: The cover is removable but it can't be washed
The name Nettle conjures up images of weeds stinging your shins rather than softness. However, Jay-Be claims the nettles and other plant-based fibres (such as cotton) used in this mattress provide natural comfort and exceptional breathability.
The large 17.5cm pocket spring core and 3cm mini pocket springs means we class this double mattress as pocket sprung, rather than hybrid – despite the fibrous layers between the springs.
Our independent tests rated its firmness as 6.5, on a scale of 1 (very firm) to 10 (very soft).

If you experience back pain, you may be swayed by SleepSoul’s marketing promise that the Space Orthopaedic Cool Gel mattress provides ‘an exceptional blend of orthopaedic support and luxurious comfort’.
It comprises several layers, including a mixture of pocket springs, foam and memory foam. Starting at the bottom, you’ll find a large 22cm core of micro pocket springs topped with a 2cm layer of standard foam, then another 8cm layer of pocket springs. This is topped off with several layers of foam and memory foam, including a 2cm layer closest to the surface you sleep on, which Sleepsoul calls ‘cooling gel’.
Does this double mattress provide long-lasting back support?

We like: The 60-night sleep trial
We don't like: The cover isn't removable for washing
Not quite sure if you want a foam or pocket sprung mattress? Silentnight's Just Bliss double mattress combines a large pocket sprung core with layers of gel-infused foam, which should provide you with support and a bit of pressure relief for an aching back.
Our independent tests for firmness gave this mattress a 5.4 score on a scale of 1 (very firm) to 10 (very soft). It feels cold to lie on, so it's a good choice if you tend to sweat at night.
But will it give you all-round body support and last as long as you'd expect?
Head to our full Silentnight Just Bliss mattress review to find out.

We like: Caters to bed partners who like softer and firmer tensions
We don't like: You can't sleep in the middle if you mix the tension options
The Dormeo S Plus Evolution memory-foam mattress has a highly unusual core. It’s essentially made up of two ‘single’ mattress cores that have a firm side and a soft side. Pink is the firm side, and grey is the softer side. They fit together to create a double-sized mattress, but you can flip them individually to suit the preferences of sleeping partners on different sides of the bed. Overall, it is quite a soft mattress, but you can feel a difference between the softer and firmer sides.
As you might hope for a high-concept bed, the Dormeo S Plus Evolution is available on a 60-night comfort trial. If you don’t like it, the manufacturer will collect it for free and refund you in full. It also comes with a 15-year warranty.

The Simba Hybrid is currently on sale at Land of Beds for £639.
We like: 10-year warranty included
We don't like: Feels a bit bouncy
Introduced in 2023, the Simba Hybrid is an update to the Simba Original Hybrid. It's made in the UK and is delivered rolled up in a box. If you decide it's not for you, you can return it for free within the 200-night trial.
The mattress is composed of a 2.5cm layer of recycled foam, covered by 16cm pocket sprung core, then 2cm standard polyurethane foam. There's another 2.5cm mini pocket spring layer on top, along with 2cm of Simbatex high-resistance polyurethane foam.
As for firmness, our independent tests rated it as 6, on a scale of 1 (very firm) to 10 (very soft).

Lisa Galliers, Which? mattress expert, says:
'Let's face it, the mattress market is not known for being short of a deal or two. We see deals on mattresses every month, so our advice remains the same: if you need a new mattress, don't buy one purely because it's on sale.
Don't rush to buy a mattress purely because it's on sale, as there are plenty of discounts throughout the year. Some of the mattresses in this round-up have been available at the offer price for a while, but are still a good price.
We've also tested a range of good-value mattresses from brands that don't usually offer discounts – so if you want to keep costs down, you can still pick up a decent model for a fraction of the price of some.'

Whether you're after a new double mattress or want to swap your old mattress for a new memory foam one, it's worth keeping an eye out for sales on your favourite brand's website. Social media can also be a good place to spot a bargain.
Offers come and go throughout the year, but the deals might not be on the particular mattress you want, so check the T&Cs.
Make sure you're ready when the discounts start. Compare mattresses to find out which ones will be a dream and which could turn into an expensive nightmare – and don't forget that retailers might have other sales in-store.
You might have spotted Dormeo mattresses on TV or via ads popping up on Facebook – we've seen a range of deals available, along with free gifts such as pillows and duvets on top of existing price reductions. Although its mattresses can be found through other retailers, in the past we've noticed that buying direct from Dormeo can sometimes save you a small amount in addition to any free gifts it may be offering.
We'd suggest you check the website as a starting point. We've seen discounts of up to 60% in the past.

The Emma Original mattress used to be one of the most popular models on the Which? website. But while it scored well in our lab tests overall, we're not currently recommending any Emma mattresses as Best Buys because the brand is being taken to court by the Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) regulator over its online sales practices.

Another bed-in-a-box mattress brand, Eve is now owned by Bensons for Beds. You can find deals on the Eve Sleep website and at other retailers. It offers a 200-night sleep trial, so you can try out the mattress and, if you don't love it, send it back free of charge within 40 days.
Be warned, though – if you buy an Eve mattress via another retailer, such as Argos, the trial-nights offer might not apply.
As a guide, we've seen deals offering 20-30% off and up to 50%. Check the T&Cs before you buy, as these discounts often apply only to certain models, if you spend above a particular amount or for new customers. Eve seems to swap deals fairly regularly between its mattresses.
Read our Eve mattress reviews.
You might not see Ikea mattresses on offer, but that's because they're generally good value for money at full price. We've got 12 of them on our website, ranging from £99 up to around £689, with an average price of £312.
Not sure which one to go for? Head to the top five most popular Ikea mattresses to choose from there.

Simba is another brand that's no stranger to a deal, and one that's also been at the centre of a (now resolved) CMA investigation into sales tactics. Simba mattresses arrive vacuum-packed in a box to your door; the company offers free returns and its website states that it won’t ask you to get the mattress back in the box for the return journey.
We've spotted a range of deals from Simba offering 25-40% off. As a rule, 30-35% off is a good deal. Do check the T&Cs, though, as there can be conditions attached – such as a minimum spend or a discount that applies only to a particular mattress.

Sleep trials – commonly offered by online-only, bed-in-a-box mattress brands – give you time to try out a mattress to see if it's the right one for you. If you don’t like it, you can return it within the trial period.
This can be useful if you're not sure which type of mattress will suit you best.
A long sleep trial lets you try your mattress during different seasons and gives you time to adjust, which is particularly important if you’re switching from springs to foam. If you experience back pain, for example, it could take a while to get used to a new mattress.
Not all sleep trials are the same, though, and some have strings attached.
If you're buying a mattress that offers a sleep trial, check the T&Cs first. See how many nights you'll be able to keep it for, whether you need to use a mattress protector and how to return it if it's not right for you.
Also, bear in mind that if you buy from a third-party retailer, the terms of a sleep trial – and whether it's offering one at all – might differ from those you get if you buy directly from the brand.
Read more about mattress sleep trials and find out which brand offers the longest.
Retailers also offer their own deals throughout the year. We've listed some retailers below to get you started. Check T&Cs for deals before you buy.
To find the best shops to buy a mattress, we surveyed 1,800 Which? Connect panel members in October 2023. We asked how satisfied people were with their shopping experience from mattress retailers, both in-store and online.
Our latest survey of the best mattress brands rates mattress shops including Emma, Eve, Ikea and John Lewis on the quality and range of their products, as well as on advice and delivery. It also reveals that Which? members are divided on where they shopped for their mattresses: 47% bought theirs in-store, while 53% shopped online.
