We don't like: The cover isn't removable for washing, there's no sleep trial available via Amazon

This mattress has been in the Silentnight range for a few years, but it's still popular. Featuring a combination of pocket springs and a layer of gel on the top, it should provide the best of both.

It's rated 'cold' to lie on, so it won't trap heat around you - ideal if you tend to sweat in bed or suffer with hot flushes. And there's not much of a memory effect, from the foam layers, either. 

Also known as the Just Bliss, when sold directly from Silentnight, this Studio Gel version is often on offer - we've spotted it in the Black Friday sales before and it's currently at a decent price from Amazon, which is why we've made it Our Pick. There's no trial nights offer via Amazon, though.

Best mattress deals: £200-£299

Argos Home Hybrid 900

Buy for £180 at Argos, saving £60 on the full price (according to Argos)

We like: It's very cheap

We don't like: It's bouncy

Despite the 'hybrid' in its name, this incredibly cheap mattress is predominantly made of old-fashioned open-coil spring technology, which is cheaper to manufacture than modern pocket springs. Open-coil sprung mattresses have a bad reputation for durability, but a layer of mini pocket springs and foam add greater depth and plushness to this basic design.

It has a one-year guarantee and there is no sleep trial.

SleepSoul Heaven

Although the B&Q and Amazon deals might look like the best price its worth noting you will get a 60-night sleep trial on this mattress if you buy from Mattress Online UK that is not available from the two cheapest retailers.

The SleepSoul Heaven is a pocket sprung mattress covered with multiple layers of foam, including a pillow top, and layers of ‘coolgel’ foam. These are designed to help provide a supportive, cool,  comfy and breathable surface to lie on. 

It’s a boxed mattress, which arrives rolled up, making it much easier to get to the room of your choice. It's been on sale for quite a while, so you'd have to assume it must have been getting something right, or is it just the keen price that keeps customers coming back for more?

Simba claims that its patented Simbatex foam keeps you cooler during the night because its open-cell structure encourages air flow through the mattress. It also includes a high definition foam which provides a zoned base layer that holds its shape better to support every area of your body. 

Buying from Argos means you won't get the 100-night trial you would receive from Simba, but it does include a three-year guarantee which is decent for a cheap mattress.

Jay-Be 2000 Hybrid E-Pocket Eco Truecore

We like: It's not too bouncy

We don't like: The cover isn't removable for washing

This isn't the cheapest price we've seen for the Jay-Be 2000 Hybrid mattress, but it's still a good deal. 

The term ‘hybrid’ in this mattress's name is slightly confusing. Hybrid mattresses are usually a mix of pocket springs and foam layers, but there's no foam in this mattress. This is to conform to Jay-Be’s eco claims. Instead, it's made from pocket springs and layers of polyester: an 18.5cm pocket spring core, with a 2.5cm mini pocket spring core on top and several layers of polyester webbing.

There’s plenty going on underneath the cover of this mattress to give you a comfy night's sleep. The top-most layers are made from standard foam and a 2cm layer of memory foam. There's an 18.5cm pocket spring core and a 6.5cm mini pocket spring core with 0.5cm of standard foam sandwiched between them, all surrounded by a standard foam border.

Dormeo Octasmart Hybrid

Get it for £360 at Argos (£240 off the normal price, says the retailer).

We like: It has a 100-night sleep trial

We don't like: It's easy to turn over on

This hybrid mattress combines a 10.5cm micro pocket-spring core, topped with a further 6cm foam spring layer and a 2cm covering of memory foam closest to the body. The manufacturer claims to have ‘zoned’ this into three distinct areas, so that it supports your shoulders, back and hips correctly.

It comes with a removable and washable cover which is useful if you want to try to reduce allergies by washing the cover to kill the dust mites that love a nice cosy mattress.

Memory Foam Warehouse Coolmax Hybrid

We don't like: It's rather bouncy

This is quite an unusual hybrid mattress as the foam layer is much thicker than the springs - usually they are the other way around. Its 17cm foam base has a 4cm layer of pocket springs above it, followed by a further 3cm section of memory foam on top, closest to the side you lie on. 

The manufacturer classes it as a medium-firm mattress and our tests agreed with this description. It’s also got a removable washable mattress cover, which can help you banish those allergy-causing dust mites from the bedroom.

Otty Aura

Buy this mattress direct from Otty for £404 (or £475 with two Deluxe Pure pillows included).

• Double
• Hybrid

We like: Comes with a 100-night sleep trial

We don't like: The cover isn't removable for washing

We've seen the Otty Aura on offer plenty of times, but at the moment, you can choose between a discount of up to 25% (to get the price referenced here) or two free Otty Deluxe Pure pillows instead. 

Interestingly, while this mattress is listed under a Black Friday exclusive banner, the fine print says this offer is ongoing and not time-limited.  Still, it's a good price for this hybrid mattress.

It's made from a combination of foam and springs. In our tests it was rated 'cold' to lie on, which means it won't trap heat around you. It's not too bouncy and the foam layers don't engulf you too much.

Eve Premium

Buy it for £425 direct from Eve Sleep (a 50% saving on the full price of £849, according to Eve).

We don't like: You have to pay to return it beyond 40 days into your trial

Eve has a complicated Black Friday deal in place where adding a product worth more than £750 to your cart gives you an automatic 50% discount, taking this mattress to its cheapest price in 6 months.

This mattress is an updated version of the original Eve Premium we’ve tested twice before. This version still has an 18.5cm foam core, but the three layers above have been tweaked slightly. There’s a 2cm layer of foam on top of the core, plus two further layers of memory foam (3cm each). Eve says one is a brand-new pressure relieving foam and the other is graphite infused memory foam to help keep you cool.

There’s a removable polyester cover that's washable, so cleaning up spills or accidents is made much easier, as is trying to get rid of allergy-causing dust mites.

EZE Hybrid Ultra Mattress

Typically on sale for £599, a double mattress is currently available for £539 at EZE.

We like: It's easy to turn over on

We don't like: The cover isn't removable for washing

EZE describes this mattress as a hybrid, but the large pocket spring core means we class it as pocket sprung, despite the foam layers. 

The foam layers won't suck you in, and it's breathable, so if you do tend to sweat or have hot flushes, the cover does a good job of wicking away moisture. 

Bought direct from EZE, it's delivered vacuum-packed in a box. Delivery is free, but there's no trial-night offer. You can, however, return it within 14 days of buying as part of the Consumer Contracts Regulations – just keep the original box. 

It comes with a 10-year warranty.

Eve Premium Hybrid

Cheapest price in the past six months: £475*

Buy it for £475 direct from Eve Sleep (a 50% saving on the full price of £949, according to Eve). 

We like: The cover is machine washable

We don't like: It's heavy

Eve has a complicated Black Friday offer in place. It says that you get 50% off if you spend £750, but in fact adding a product worth more than £750 to your cart gives you an automatic 50% discount without you actually having to spend £750.

This is the third iteration of the Premium Hybrid mattress we’ve tested, most recently after Eve was acquired by Bensons for beds. There have been a few changes under its cover - the base layer is thinner, as is the spring core, but there are more foam layers.

Eve says this mattress is medium-firm in feel. In our independent firmness test we measured it as 7.5 on a scale where 1 is the firmest and 10 the softest. 

It comes with a 10-year warranty and a lengthy 365-night sleep trial, during which time you can send it back for a full refund if you decide it’s not for you.

Best mattress deals: £600 and up

Simba Hybrid

The Simba Hybrid is currently on sale for around £600 at Simba, Bensons for beds  and Land of Beds.

• Double
• Memory foam and springs

We like: A 10-year warranty is included

We don't like: It feels a bit bouncy

Introduced in 2023, the Simba Hybrid is an update to the Simba Original Hybrid. It's made in the UK and is delivered rolled up in a box. If you decide it's not for you, you can return it for free within the 200-night trial.

The mattress is composed of a 2.5cm layer of recycled foam, covered by 16cm pocket sprung core, then 2cm standard polyurethane foam. There's another 2.5cm mini pocket spring layer on top, along with 2cm of Simbatex high-resistance polyurethane foam. As for firmness, our independent tests rated it as 6, on a scale of 1 (very firm) to 10 (very soft).

Simba also has its own offer running, where you can purchase the same mattress with a bundle of simba pillows and a mattress protector.

Rem-Fit 600 Lux Elite Hybrid

We don't like: It's not the easiest to turn over on

Rem-Fit is doing something complicated with its Black Friday sale offer which it calls double savings. It's reduced this mattress from £899.99 to £809.99 and is offering a further discount if you apply a code.

REM-Fit’s 600 Lux Elite double mattress is a hybrid mattress featuring two layers of springs – a large core and a layer of micro springs – plus layers of pressure-relieving foam that the manufacturer says is breathable and helps to prevent overheating. 

Our tests revealed that it has some attributes of memory foam that some sleepers love and some sleepers dislike. So its worth reading our full review to see if it gives you the positives of good pressure relief or the negatives of being overwarm before you buy.

Panda Hybrid Bamboo Pro

Buy it for £903 direct from Panda (a saving of £387, according to the retailer).

We like: The washable cover could help allergy sufferers keep dust mites at bay

We don't like: It's bouncy

This hybrid double mattress is constructed from a 13.5cm pocket spring core sandwiched between high-resistance polyurethane foam (PU HR) below and 2.7cm viscoelastic memory foam and topped by 4.2cm of PU HR. It’s 26.5cm deep.

It has a removable polyester and bamboo cover that can be easily unzipped and washed at up to 40°C. 

Panda describes this mattress as medium-firm.

Dreams Hyde & Sleep Deluxe Ice 

Buy it for £1,119 direct from Dreams (a saving of £300, according to the retailer).

• Double

We like: It won't leave you hot and sticky

We don't like: The cover isn't washable

This Hyde & Sleep mattress is available exclusively from Dreams online and in store. Although it is quite heavy, it arrives rolled up in a bag so you can easily get it to the room of your choice. Dreams offers a five-year warranty, a 100-night sleep trial and free delivery. 

This mattress is constructed from four layers of foam including a 14.5cm standard polyurethane (PU) foam core on which sits a 6cm layer of standard foam. On top of this is a 7.5cm layer of HR PU foam and at the very top, is a 4cm layer of memory foam closest to the surface you sleep on.

Sealy Ultra Elevate Lunar

Buy for £1,599 at DFS (a saving of £400, according to the retailer). 

• Double

We like: Good for front sleepers

We don't like: It's bouncy

One for people looking for bargains at the luxury end of the market, the Elevate Ultra Lunar is made by Sealy in the UK exclusively for DFS. DFS offers a seven-year manufacturer's guarantee and a 14-day returns policy on online purchases (but conditions apply). 

It is a luxurious 33.5cm thick and has a polyester and polypropylene top cover that can’t be removed. One for people who like a really soft bed our independent tests ranked it as 8.7, on a scale from 1 (very firm) to 10 (very soft).

Woolroom Rodmarton firm tension

We like: The 100-night sleep trial

We don't like: It's really heavy

Buy for £1,773 from Woolroom (a saving of £955, according to the brand). 

At full price this is very expensive mattress. But a lot of modern mattress technology has gone into this product, which also uses several more environmentally sustainable components than man-made foam and synthetic fabrics.

It has a 16cm layer of cotton calico-covered micro pocket springs providing its core, with a sandwich of two mini-springs and latex adding extra support. The plush pillowtop includes British wool and cotton padding layers. It’s 35cm thick and has a non-removable viscose and wool cover. 

Despite the firm tension implied in the name, our independent tests graded it as 7.1 on a scale from 1 (very hard) to 10 (very soft).

How to spot a good deal on a mattress

Lisa Galliers, Which? mattress expert, says:

'Let's face it, the mattress market is not known for being short of a deal or two. We see deals on mattresses every month, so our advice remains the same: if you need a new mattress, don't buy one purely because it's on sale.

Don't rush to buy a mattress purely because it's on sale, as there are plenty of discounts throughout the year. Some of the mattresses in this round-up have been available at the offer price for a while, but are still a good price.

We've also tested a range of good-value mattresses from brands that don't usually offer discounts – so if you want to keep costs down, you can still pick up a decent model for a fraction of the price of some.'

How to get the best deals on specific mattress brands

Whether you're after a new double mattress or want to swap your old mattress for a new memory foam one, it's worth keeping an eye out for sales on your favourite brand's website. Social media can also be a good place to spot a bargain. 

Offers come and go throughout the year, but the deals might not be on the particular mattress you want, so check the T&Cs. 

Make sure you're ready when the discounts start. Compare mattresses to find out which ones will be a dream and which could turn into an expensive nightmare – and don't forget that retailers might have other sales in-store.

Dormeo mattress deals

You might have spotted Dormeo mattresses on TV or via ads popping up on Facebook – we've seen a range of deals available, along with free gifts such as pillows and duvets on top of existing price reductions. Although its mattresses can be found through other retailers, in the past we've noticed that buying direct from Dormeo can sometimes save you a small amount in addition to any free gifts it may be offering. 

We'd suggest you check the website as a starting point. We've seen discounts of up to 60% in the past.

Emma mattress deals

The Emma Original mattress used to be one of the most popular models on the Which? website. But while it scored well in our lab tests overall, we're not currently recommending any Emma mattresses as Best Buys because the brand is being taken to court by the Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) regulator over its online sales practices.

Eve mattress deals

Another bed-in-a-box mattress brand, Eve is now owned by Bensons for Beds. You can find deals on the Eve Sleep website and at other retailers. It offers a 200-night sleep trial, so you can try out the mattress and, if you don't love it, send it back free of charge within 40 days. 

Be warned, though – if you buy an Eve mattress via another retailer, such as Argos, the trial-nights offer might not apply.

As a guide, we've seen deals offering 20-30% off and up to 50%. Check the T&Cs before you buy, as these discounts often apply only to certain models, if you spend above a particular amount or for new customers. Eve seems to swap deals fairly regularly between its mattresses.

Ikea mattress deals

You might not see Ikea mattresses on offer, but that's because they're generally good value for money at full price. We've got 12 of them on our website, ranging from £99 up to around £689, with an average price of £312.

Simba mattress deals

Simba is another brand that's no stranger to a deal, and one that's also been at the centre of a (now resolved) CMA investigation into sales tactics. Simba mattresses arrive vacuum-packed in a box to your door; the company offers free returns and its website states that it won’t ask you to get the mattress back in the box for the return journey. 

We've spotted a range of deals from Simba offering 25-40% off. As a rule, 30-35% off is a good deal. Do check the T&Cs, though, as there can be conditions attached – such as a minimum spend or a discount that applies only to a particular mattress.

Are mattress sleep trials worth it?

Sleep trials – commonly offered by online-only, bed-in-a-box mattress brands – give you time to try out a mattress to see if it's the right one for you. If you don’t like it, you can return it within the trial period. 

This can be useful if you're not sure which type of mattress will suit you best.

A long sleep trial lets you try your mattress during different seasons and gives you time to adjust, which is particularly important if you’re switching from springs to foam. If you experience back pain, for example, it could take a while to get used to a new mattress.

Not all sleep trials are the same, though, and some have strings attached. 

If you're buying a mattress that offers a sleep trial, check the T&Cs first. See how many nights you'll be able to keep it for, whether you need to use a mattress protector and how to return it if it's not right for you.

Also, bear in mind that if you buy from a third-party retailer, the terms of a sleep trial – and whether it's offering one at all – might differ from those you get if you buy directly from the brand.

Our latest survey of the best mattress brands rates mattress shops including Emma, Eve, Ikea and John Lewis on the quality and range of their products, as well as on advice and delivery. It also reveals that Which? members are divided on where they shopped for their mattresses: 47% bought theirs in-store, while 53% shopped online.
