How Which? tests vacuum cleaners
When we test vacuum cleaners in our labs, we attach the vacs to custom-built test rigs, running each up and down carpet – in one test alone it covers 288m – trying to clean up a variety of things.
- Pet hair – our testers comb cat and dog hair into the carpet and then time how long the vacuum cleaner takes to pick it up. A Best Buy vacuum cleaner should get the job done in under a minute.
- Sand – a machine grinds extra-fine sand, which is specially imported from Arizona, into the carpet. After being moved back and forth over the carpet five times, we measure how much dust is left by the vacuum cleaner in the carpet.
- Dust – we use special machines to measure how much dust and fine particles the vac can retain. Bad vacuum cleaners will suck dust up only to release it back into the air again afterwards.
