Is new Gtech Multi vac better than a Dyson?

Gtech reveals new handheld cordless vacuum cleaner

GTech Multi lifestyle

Gtech claims its new Multi handheld cordless vacuum cleaner outperforms the UK’s leading handheld vacuum and can vacuum for five times as long on every charge.

Gtech’s full-sized AirRam cordless vacuum cleaner has been a big hit with shoppers since its April 2012 launch and is now one of the UK’s biggest-selling vacuums, with more than 100,000 sold so far this year.

Gtech says its new Gtech Multi handheld vacuum cleaner is the ‘perfect partner’ for the AirRam as its tools give it the flexibility to clean all the hard to reach places like curtains, skirting boards, stairs, shelves and inside your car.

The Gtech Multi will be available from John Lewis for £149 and will be sold together with the Gtech AirRam for £299. We’ve put the new handheld through our full cleaning tests in the Which? lab – find out whether it lives up to the hype in our full Gtech Multi review.

We’ve also independently tested and rated the original model in our full Gtech AirRam review, to see how it compares to other cordless vacuum cleaners such as the Dyson Animal DC44.

Better than a Dyson?

Gtech claims that the new Multi outperforms the best-selling handheld vacuum cleaner from Dyson, with better dust pick-up and five times the run time of the Dyson DC34.

However, the DC34 is one of Dyson’s older models. It would be interesting to see how dust pick-up on the Gtech Multi compares to one of Dyson’s newer cordless vacuums, like the DC58. Dyson specifies 17 minutes of runtime for this vacuum.

According to Gtech, the Multi takes four hours to fully charge, which will give you 30 minutes of continuous run time. Gtech says this is down to its high-capacity lithium-ion battery.

Dyson has previously successfully challenged Gtech abroad and in the UK on its product claims.

Floor to ceiling cleaning

When creating the Gtech Multi, Gtech says it wanted to combine the AirRAM’s powerful floor cleaning with the flexibility of a multi-tool handheld vacuum cleaner.

The Gtech Multi comes with a 36cm extension tube for reaching up to cobwebs or along skirting boards. Meanwhile, a built-in hose and a suspension tool on the main cleaning head should help you to reach into awkward corners and clean curved surfaces or upholstery.

This handheld vac comes with a crevice tool and dusting brush, which are neatly stored onboard the machine.
