Best exercise bikes 2025: tried and tested for home workouts

Cycle your way to a healthier you with our top picks – as well as expert tips on buying the best exercise bike to use at home
Chris BrookesSenior researcher & writer

Chris tests tons of sleep products. But it’s not all lying down on the job - testing running shoes, treadmills and exercise bikes ensures he works up a sweat, too.

Elderly man in a red shirt exercises on a stationary bike, focused and smiling, with gym equipment in a bright setting.

The best exercise bikes are comfortable, easy to use and give you the best chance of making exercise a habit in the comfort of your own home. The worst are difficult to get comfy on, bulky and sometimes unstable.

We've tested and reviewed all the most popular brands, including Peloton, Nordic Track, Reebok and more.

We've uncovered big differences in the performance of exercise bikes.

The top two did well enough during our testing to be Best Buys. Two cheaper bikes also proved impressive compared with pricier rivals and earned our Great Value recommendation.

How we test exercise bikes

Group shot testing exercise bikes
Which? testers putting a range of exercise bikes through their trials.

We regularly revisit the exercise bikes on sale to see if there are any more popular models that need testing and when we find them we do. All exercise bikes are assessed on the following:

  • What's the bike like to ride? Our testers try out each bike at different speeds and resistance levels. We pay particular attention to comfort on this test. Some bikes have comfy saddles and handlebar grips, while others are tough and rough on the body.
  • Is it safe and stable? Most bikes are stable at low intensity, but once the effort ramps up, some bikes we tested can move around and rock, which isn't a good sensation or particularly safe.
  • How useful is the display? We take into account the metrics you can track, how clear the display is and how easy it is to navigate any menus.
  • How easy is the bike to set up and adjust? We look at how easy the bike is to set up initially, then how adjustable it is so you can achieve a comfortable fit. The best models will have a multitude of easily adjustable configurations.

Why you can trust us: at Which? we're free from manufacturer and retailer influence. Find out more about our impartiality and how your support helps us to stay editorially independent

How to buy the best exercise bike for home use

Testing exercise bikes
Working out which features you need is a key consideration when choosing an exercise bike.

When shopping for the perfect exercise bike for home use, you'll need to consider budget, how much space you have, how you prefer to ride and what features you need.

  • Spending more usually nets you a more feature-packed exercise bike, but this might not be essential if you're just keen to get moving. We've found decent budget options if you just want a basic exercise bike.
  • Floor space is a key consideration – trying to squeeze a large exercise bike into a small room or home will risk it becoming more of a hindrance than a help, especially if it's a shared space.
  • If you're particularly tall or short, check that the seat and handlebar can be adjusted to suit your height, as this will affect how comfortable the bike is for you to ride.
  • Check the maximum user weight too, as some models – particularly cheaper ones – have a comparatively low maximum weight limit. With the models we've tested, we found that some budget upright models have a limit of 100kg, while more premium spinner models have limits of up to 136kg.
  • Consider an absorbent mat to put the exercise bike on. Without a breeze, you'll sweat significantly and will want something to mop it up.

Are exercise bikes good for weight loss?

Exercise bikes can burn more calories than any other activity you do in the gym, according to a comparison of different sports activities by Harvard Health

Moderate cycling on a stationary bike for 30 minutes can help burn anywhere from 210 calories for a person weighing around 9 stone (57kg) and up to 294 calories for someone weighing about 13 stone (83kg), although these figures vary according to the intensity of the workout.

If you exercise vigorously, a 30-minute exercise bike session can burn anywhere from 315 to 441 calories, depending on your weight.

Bear in mind that, while it has many wider health benefits, exercise alone isn't necessarily a magic bullet for weight loss – it's important to consider your diet too.

The NHS guide to weight loss covers how much exercise you should be aiming for each week, as well as dietary changes for health.
