Best travel mugs and reusable coffee cups 2025: keep drinks hot or cold for longer
The best travel mugs will keep your tea warm on a long journey and your chilled water cold. The best reusable coffee cups are a great sustainable option if you enjoy hot drinks, and while their temperature retention isn’t as impressive, they're ideal for a morning commute and help to reduce landfill waste.
We test every travel mug and reusable coffee cup rigorously to see how well they perform. We assess temperature retention over multiple hours and test for leaks - a common complaint - by opening and shaking the mugs and cups 100 times.
We even check whether any flavours linger after use, and we drop each mug and cup repeatedly to test their durability.
We tested a selection of travel mugs, including ones from Bodum, Contigo and Stanley, and found two Best Buys. Reusable coffee cups from Chilly’s, KeepCup, Frank Green and more were also put through their paces, and again we found two Best Buys.

How we test travel mugs and reusable coffee cups
We buy all the travel mugs and reusable coffee cups, before putting them through a range of cleaning and navigation tests. We don't accept freebies and we're not influenced by retailers in what we test or say.
We regularly revisit the travel mugs and reusable coffee cups on sale to see if there are any more popular models that need testing, and when we find them, we do so.

Temperature control
- We measure the temperature retention of every coffee cup by recording how much it drops every hour for four hours. We do this for double the time for travel mugs (eight hours) as they’re meant to retain temperature better.
- Travel mugs are checked at the end of the day to see if they have managed to keep the drink warm or cool over the course of a whole day.
- We also use thermal imaging cameras to check each mug for any clear places where heat is escaping from.
Leakproof
- We check if each travel mug leaks by opening and closing the lid 100 times.
- We check in at various intervals to see if it will leak when held upside down or shaken.
Cleaning
- We rate each travel mug and coffee cup on how easy it is to wash by hand.
- We also test for any residual odour and/or excessive staining on the inside of each product.
Ease of use
- We assess each mug and cup for how easy it is to hold, and use Cambridge simulation gloves to see which ones are more comfortable for people with reduced hand mobility.
- We also look at how easy they are to drink from.
Taste
- To find out if any coffee cup or travel mug is holding onto residual flavours, we leave coffee in them for over eight hours before washing them out with fresh tea made in each.
- A panel of taste testers then assess whether the tea tastes similar to a controlled sample made in a clean mug.
Durability
- Each travel mug is dropped multiple times to see how easily they dent, and if spills can be prevented.
Reusable coffee cup or travel mug: which is right for you?
Reusable coffee cups
These are a reusable version of a disposable takeaway cup. They can cost less than £10, and go up to around £30 for pricier cups insulated with stainless steel.
Most have a capacity of around 350ml, which is enough for a regular-sized, shop-bought coffee.
It's important to stress that coffee cups aren't designed to be leakproof. They are intended for transporting coffee by hand over short distances and as a way to avoid adding to the landfill.
Travel mugs
Prices range from £5 to around £35. They usually look more like a vacuum flask and are typically available in a regular 350ml size; some brands have larger options (450ml or more).
Most are designed to be leakproof, unlike reusable cups. However, we found from our testing that some still leak easily, even when advertised with phrases such as 'leak-resistant'.
Do travel mugs keep drinks cold? Yes, they're not only designed to keep your drinks warm for the entire day, they are also meant to keep drinks cool for just as long. Go for a travel mug over a reusable cup if you want your drink to remain at the optimum temperature for more than a few hours.

Rinse after every use This will help to prevent staining and any odours building up.
Find out if it's dishwasher-safe While some coffee cups and travel mugs can be popped into a dishwasher on the top shelf, others need to be washed by hand. We've let you know if the ones we've reviewed are dishwasher-safe, but always check the packaging or the manufacturer's website.
Pay attention to the lid They often have nooks and crannies that are hard to reach, especially if your travel mug has a complex lock mechanism to prevent spills. You can buy a small round cleaning brush, or a bottle brush, for getting into these small spaces.
Dry with the lid off As most travel mugs are leakproof, leaving them to dry with the lid on will likely trap humidity and odours inside.
Deep clean with baking soda and vinegar Pair baking soda with white vinegar to effectively clean the inside of your travel mug. Wait for the reaction to finish, rinse out the cup and repeat if necessary.
