Since being founded more than 70 year ago as a provider of affordable holidays for older people, Saga has branched into providing various financial products aimed at the over-50s.

It offers three tiers of travel insurance cover: Essential (lowest), Standard and Plus (highest). However, with Plus and Standard, you'll get different levels of cover again, depending on whether you've bought annual or single-trip insurance.

Saga's policies are underwritten Astrenska Insurance Limited.

Is Saga travel insurance good if you have a medical condition?

Saga is a specialist provider for covering customers with pre-existing medical conditions. This means it may be more likely to cover customers with conditions that other insurers would be less likely to take on.

However, if you have a medical condition, you should still look at a mixture of specialist and non-specialist providers

To add your conditions to the policy, you'll need to declare them when you take it out. Saga works with a medical screening company called Verisk to ask customers about their medical conditions.

However, if you're struggling to get cover, see our guide on travel insurance if you have a medical condition.

How good is Saga at handling claims?

According to the most recently published data, Saga's underwriter – Astrenska Insurance Limited – accepted 90% to 95% of claims made on annual European policies in 2023. This is higher than the market average of 82.20%.

It paid 85% to 90% of claims on worldwide policies, which is more than the market average of 78.90%.

And it accepted 85% to 90% of single-trip claims, which is better than the average of 80.40%.
