'Go for Holidaysafe's high-end policies'
Dean Sobers, Which? travel insurance expert, says:
The Platinum policy sat in the upper fifth of 163 policies rated, with a score of 70%.
Highlights included no excesses for claims. The policy also has a £5,000 limit on baggage cover - with gadgets cover at £3,000. Importantly, though, you can only claim up to £500 per individual item.
The Platinum policy covers costs related to missed departures up to £1,500. Premier and Premier Plus cover these up to £1,000. You can claim for delays due to strike action or your car breaking down, but you'll need to purchase the Large Scale Events add-on for protection against other causes such as civil unrest or volcanic ash.
Maximum trip length
For annual travel insurance, the Platinum and Premier Plus policies have a maximum trip length of 45 days, but with Platinum this can be extended to 60 by contacting Holidaysafe.
Standard and Premier policies have a maximum trip length of 31 days for annual policies.
Single-trip policies have maximum trip lengths dependent on age. It's 94 days if you're up to 65 years old, 45 days between 66 and 79 years old, and 31 days if you're 80 or over.
Well-rounded cancellation cover
All four policies cover any pre-paid transport, activities and accommodation if you need to cancel or cut your trip short. Limits on cancellation costs range between £1,500 and £7,500.
Premier Plus earned a highly respectable 65% score (placing it in the top 40% of policies reviewed), with Premier scoring 63% - just above the average score of 62%.
Standard scored 58% overall, placing it in the bottom half of our table.
Unlike the Platinum policy, Premier, Premier Plus and Standard have excesses ranging from £40 to £100.
Holidaysafe offers cover for additional hospital-related costs during treatment abroad; however, the Standard policy has a daily limit of £20 and a total limit of £400 compared with the other three policies, which have a daily limit of £50 and a total of £1,000.
Is Holidaysafe good if you have a medical condition?
If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you'll need to declare it when you buy your cover, which may result in a higher premium.
The medical screening process is overseen by a company called Protectif.
Holidaysafe isn't a specialist provider for customers with pre-existing medical conditions, but this doesn't necessarily mean it won't be able to cover your medical condition at a reasonable price.
Holidaysafe's claims are handled by a firm called Collinson Claims - which is connected to the underwriter (Collinson Insurance).
Holidaysafe's underwriter, Collinson, is a trading name of Astrenska.
According to the latest data from the Financial Conduct Authority, Astrenska paid out 90-95% of claims made on annual European policies in 2024 – better than the market average of 86.3%
It paid 90-95% of claims on worldwide policies, above the market average of 84.5%
It accepted 85-90% of single-trip claims, above the average of 80%.
Holidaysafe's travel insurance: how can I claim?
For medical emergencies abroad, call +44 (0)333 005 1084.
To make other types of claim, call 0333 005 1105. You can also start a claim online
Insurers will usually expect you to try recouping lost costs (such as deposits) elsewhere before claiming with them – for example, checking with the travel provider if you're entitled to a refund or can move a cancelled trip. However, you can still call the insurer to let it know if there's a chance you'll need to claim.
You'll need to provide your policy number when you call.
How does Holidaysafe compare with other providers?
The Platinum policy has a score of 70% and is a Best Buy. Gold, from Travel Insurance Saver, Platinum from Admiral and Gold from Leisure Guard are just above it with 71%.
Yes – if you can get Holidaysafe's Platinum or Premier Plus policies at a decent price. These offer Best Buy cover that we think is well worth considering.
How we rate travel insurance
We analyse and rate 120 key elements of travel insurance policies to come up with the overall policy score. We assess how important each individual element is to travellers when choosing and using a travel insurance policy, and factor this in when calculating our total policy score.
Initially, we score all of the product elements out of five, reflecting how competitive each provider is in this area compared with other insurers. We then adjust the impact the more and less important elements have on the overall policy score.
Our 'Best Buy' badge recognises the individual products that stood out as being the most comprehensive in our analysis.
It doesn't reflect customer service. However, we do look at claims statistics published by the Financial Conduct Authority and complaints data from the Financial Ombudsman Service, where these are available. We won't give a Best Buy badge to providers shown to reject higher-than-average numbers of claims or that have a poor track record when it comes to complaints.
Policies named as Best Buys did well in our analysis of cover, with a policy score of at least 64%.
Additionally, Best Buy policies scored well consistently across different areas of cover. To make the cut, a policy needs to have scored at least three out of five points in two thirds of the features we compare (see 'Policy score' for more).
Lastly, all Best Buy policies must provide – either as standard or as an option – the following levels of cover as a minimum:
£5m cover for medical expenses – with emergency medical repatriation and some cover for emergency dental treatment
£2,000 cancellation and travel abandonment cover – including cancellation in the event that the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advises against travel to your destination country because of natural disaster after you've insured your holiday
Cancellation cover because of the illness, injury or death of a close family member or a person you were planning to stay with
Cover for travel delays – including cover for missing your outgoing or returning flight due to delays
£1,500 cover for baggage
£2m personal liability cover
Every year, we go to as many providers as possible to gather information on a wide cross-section of the market.
